Justin Tafa of New Zealand believes his opponent in the UFC should have been disqualified for poking him in the eye. Tafa’s battle against former NFL player Austen Tate was declared a no-contest when he was unable to continue after being poked in the eye less than 30 seconds into the first round on Sunday (NZ time) in Jacksonville, Florida.
“I deserve my Win bonus that’s a DQ man,” Tafa tweeted later.
Lane grabbed Tafa in the eye with his outstretched fingers while attempting to escape a left hook from Tafa.
Tafa was instantly in agony and stated he couldn’t see out of the wounded left eye, which was still bleeding while being inspected by a doctor, throughout his five-minute recuperation time.
With Tafa’s lower eyelid bulging, the doctor had no choice but to advise referee Dan Miragliotta to call the bout off.
“Justin Tafa… I apologize. Not how I wanted it to go down. That shit is on me and I hope your eye is alright,” Tate tweeted later.
