When Gianluigi Donnarumma arrived at Paris Saint-Germain this summer, he did so with the intention of winning everything in the domestic league as well as the UEFA Champions League. The 22-year-old spoke to FranceTV on what it’s like to play for a club that is obsessed with winning the Champions League and has only grown since they came near in 2020, when they reached the final but lost to FC Bayern Munich.

“Oh no, we shouldn’t see it like that because we are already putting the pressure on ourselves. It just has to be a goal. Other great teams want the same as us,” Donnarumma said.

“So we have to move forward with our heads down, work very hard, and think game after game. And at the end, we can take stock. But obviously, we hope to go as far as possible and win.”

Donnarumma was at AC Milan, which is used to contending for big championships, but they’re just getting back on their feet financially in 2020, and they’re only starting to battle for Champions League berths again. The PSG goalkeeper said that the French club puts him under more strain than his former team.

“A little bit, yes. Because there are different goals, I’m in a great team that absolutely has to win everything, so obviously, there is a little more pressure, it’s true,” Donnarumma said.

PSG will choose between Keylor Navas and Donnarumma this month, ahead of their Round of 16 showdown against Real Madrid. Donnarumma has won a UEFA Euro but has never participated in the Champions League knockout rounds.

Messi tests positive for Covid

Seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi is the latest big-name sports player to test positive for Covid-19. The Argentine superstar is one of four first-team players of Ligue 1’s Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to have been tested positive for the virus, the French club announced on Sunday. Messi, who flew back to Argentine during the Christmas break, reportedly tested positive there. He will need to test negative before being allowed to join his teammates in Paris. The latest development means he will miss the Coupe de France game against Vannes OC on Monday. The other three players to test positive for Covid-19 are left back Juan Bernat, backup goalie Sergio Rico and 19-year-old midfielder Nathan Bitumazala.

“The 4 players that tested positive for Covid-19 are Leo Messi, Juan Bernat, Sergio Rico and Nathan Bitumazala. They are currently in isolation and are subject to the appropriate health protocol,” PSG said in a statement. The French club also confirmed that Neymar is around three weeks away from returning to training following an injury. “Neymar will continue his treatment in Brazil until 9 January with members of the Paris Saint-Germain medical and performance staff. His return to training is still expected to be in about 3 weeks,” the statement further added.
