Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone feels that his side needs “to fight to be in the Champions League” after the thrilling 4-3 win over Getafe in the La Liga fixture at Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday. The victory helped Atletico to move to fourth spot in the league standings, just one point above Barcelona, who will play Espanyol on Sunday. Despite the thrilling win, the defending champions are well off the pace in the title race this season as leaders Real Madrid are fifteen points away from them.

A sensational first half saw six goals scored, as well as a missed penalty, before Hermoso, who had been brought on after Atletico defender Felipe was dismissed in the second period, sent the home crowd into raptures, with a last-ditch winner.

“We get up and we fall down. Falling down and getting back up is what we do”, as per reports from Marca.

“We do not want to fall out  of the race for the Champions League.

“We need to get into the Champions League, that’s our reality, we have to fight to be in the Champions League, and we must accept it.”

Last week, Atletico were dealt a blow by Barcelona in the top four race as Simeone’s side were defeated 4-3 by the Catalan club. With Barcelona looking a much better side under new boss Xavi after the arrival of new players in the January transfer window, It’s going to be a really tight race for the two Champions League spots.

At the moment, The title race is literally a two-horse race, between Real Madrid and Sevilla. Los Blancos are at the summit with 54 points from 24 games while Sevilla are just four points behind them at the second spot. Meanwhile Real Betis occupy the third spot with 40 points.
