Marcelo became the most successful player in Real Madrid’s history after winning the 2021-22 La Liga title on Saturday. The Los Blancos thrashed Espanyol 4-0 at Santiago Bernabeu to clinch their 35th La Liga title, with four games to spare. More than one-sixth of Real Madrid’s league titles have been earned by squads featuring Marcelo. It was the full-back’s 24th title with Real Madrid becoming the club’s most trophy-laden player. The Brazilian started the game against the Catalan outfit and provided the assist for Rodrygo to open the scoring on 33 minutes. Rodrygo then completed the double ten minutes later before Marco Asensio’s second half strike made the score 3-0 and Karim Benzema completed the drubbing with a late tap-in from Vinicius’ cut back.

This was Marcelo’s sixth Spanish league crown

This was Marcelo’s sixth Spanish league crown, following titles in 2007, 2008, 2012, 2017 and 2020. The 33-year-old has also won four Champions League, four FIFA Club World Cups, two titles in the Copa del Rey, five Spanish Cups and three UEFA Super Cups. Prior to yesterday’s win, Marcelo was tied on the club trophy list with the great Francisco “Paco” Gento, whose heyday was the 1950s-60s. He died this year at the age of 88. The Brazilian won his 23rd trophy with the club in January when the Bernabeu outfit took the Spanish Super Cup by defeating Athletic Bilbao 2-0, a few days before Gento’s death.

Marcelo’s assist for Rodrygo

Marcelo wasn’t a regular starter in Carlo Ancelotti’s side this season and made just 11 La Liga appearances, with only six of them off the bench. He has registered two assists so far with the second one coming against Espanyol when he played a nice little cheeky pass between the legs of the defender to Rodrygo inside the left side of the penalty area. The 20-year-old winger made no mistake as he took one touch and then deposited the ball past Diego Lopez into the far bottom corner. The veteran had a fine game at the left-back position, registering pass success of 88% and attempting two shots on goal. With Real Madrid hosting Manchester City on Wednesday in the champions League last four stage, the experienced title-winner still has enough to offer the Los Blancos before reportedly leaving the club at the end of the season.

Stunning 15-year stint with Real Madrid

Marcelo joined Real Madrid from Brazilian club Fluminense in 2007 and quickly became a regular starter in the team. He was a modern-day full-back who was supremely good while going forward and his samba skills down the left flank often proved too hot for the opposition defenders to handle. His best season in terms of assists came in 2016-17 when he registered 10 assists in 30 league appearances, which are pretty good numbers for a defender. Meanwhile Marcelo has registered 103 assists and netted 38 goals in 545 appearances for Real Madrid. He has also been a regular in the national team, earning 58 caps and scoring six goals since making the senior team debut as a teenager.
