Atletico Madrid defeated Getafe 4-3 in the La Liga fixture at Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday to leapfrog Barcelona, who will play Espanyol on Sunday, into fourth spot in the league standings. A thrilling first half saw six goals scored, as well as a missed penalty, before Hermoso, who had been brought on after Atletico defender Felipe was dismissed in the second period, sent the home crowd into raptures, with a last-ditch goal. Luis Suarez won the first of three first-half penalties within the opening 8 minutes, however his spot-kick was saved by Getafe keeper David Soria. The Spanish keeper dived low to his right to make a superb save and deny the Uruguayan.

Suarez made up for his miss as he assisted Correa for the opening goal. The 35-year-old striker got on the end of a cross from the right and headed it across for Correa to slot home from close range. Diego Simeone’s side continued to play positive football and deservedly doubled the lead in the 27th minute. This time it was Correa the assist as he delivered a low cross from the right, which reached Matheus Cunha at the far post, and the Brazilian made no mistake as he tucked in from close range.

After getting two goals, the hosts went back pn the defensive mode and were punished on the half-hour mark. Jakub Kankto’s miss-kicked volley fell to Mayoral inside the box and the Spanish forward made no mistake as he slotted home to halve the deficit. Shortly after the goal, Cunha handled the ball inside the box and Getafe were awarded a penalty. Enes Unal made no mistake as he sent Atletico keeper Jan Oblak the wrong way and fired the ball into the bottom right corner.

Getafe earned their second penalty of the night with yet another penalty by an Atleti player inside the area. Unal stepped up and once again fired the ball into the right side to make the score 2-2. However the hosts restored their lead through Correa’s second of the night on the stroke of half-time.

Hermoso’s winner

Lemar’s cross from the left missed Suarez’ header at the near post but found its way to Correa at the far post and the Argentine made no mistake as he headed home from close range.

Just before the hour-mark, Atletico were reduced to 10-man as Felipe was sent off for a high boot on Mayoral. After this point, Atleti channeled their old defensive resilience before snatching a dramatic late winner in the 89th minute.

Rodrigo De Paul’s deep free-kick from the right was headed across by substitute Joao Felix and the ball fell to Hermoso in front of goal, although the Spanish striker miss-kicked initially, he recovered brilliantly to slot home with an acrobatic volley.
