Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard feels the “appointment of Xavi by Barcelona was a masterstroke.” The current Aston Villa boss was taking part in a legends match between Barca and the Reds at the weekend. The 41-year-old midfielder scored in the game which ended in a 2-1 victory for the Catalans thanks to goals from Giovanni Silva and Rivaldo. Xavi took charge of the Blaugrana from Ronald Koeman in November and has done a superb job so far despite all the financial problems.

Gerrard spoke about Barcelona after the match and was full of admiration for the club’s decision to appoint Xavi as the team’s coach. “I think the appointment of Xavi was a masterstroke by Barcelona to appoint someone who has Barcelona in his DNA and who was a world-class player for so many years,” he said.

Xavi joined Brcelona’s youth set-up in 1995 as a 15-year-old and went on to have a stellar career at Camp Nou lasting almost two decades. He won four Champions League titles and a whopping eight La Liga titles with Barca before moving to Qatari club Al-Sadd SC as a player-cum-coach in 2015 and then announced he retirement four years later.

When he took charge of Barca, they were going through a very tough period because of financial constraints which forced the departure of Lionel Messi and many other players. But the 42-year-old has done a brilliant job so far to lift the team up to third position in the La Liga standings. Meanwhile he made some clever January signings that proved crucial in turning the team’s fortunes.

“He obviously knows the style that everyone around Barcelona wants to see. After some challenging times it looks like as if they are getting back to where they need to be.”

Barca have won all of their last five league games and that includes a 4-0 thrashing of league leaders Real Madrid in the last match.  “It was obviously a huge result against Real Madrid. As a Barcelona fan from afar, it’s really good to see them back doing well.”

The Blaugrana are slowly moving up the echelons of Spanish football and initial signs show that they are not far away from regaining their lost glory.
