Atletico Madrid are reportedly keen on signing Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez. The Argentine striker has been consistently linked with a move away from the Nerazzurri over the last couple of years but he has thus far remained at San Siro. According to La Repubblica, Atletico are interested in Martinez and want to bring him in to Wanda Metropolitano this summer. Head coach Diego Simeone wants a new striker to freshen things up front. Luis Suarez is not getting any younger at 35 while Antonine Griezmann’s form since returning from Barcelona hasn’t been great.

Martinez is a hardworking forward who could very well fit into Simeone’s style of play. The Argentine has scored 65 goals and registered 22 assists in 171 appearances for the Nerazzurri since making the move to the Serie A club from Racing club in 2018. This season also he has been in very good form, having found the back of the net 16 times for Inter in all competitions so far.

Martinez’ current contract with Inter earns him EUR 6 million net per season until 2026, making him one of the highest paid players at San Siro, Inter would prefer to keep him. The Nerazzurri were forced to sell Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi last summer due to financial concerns, a situation that frustrated many fans in the Lombardy capital.

Atletico Madrid are currently placed fourth in the La Liga standings with 54 points from 29 games, level on points with third-placed Barcelona, who have played a game less and 12 points adrift of the leaders Real Madrid.

The defending champions are in an impressive run of form having won all of their last five league games. Simeone’s side also secured an aggregate 2-1 win over Manchester United to advance to the quarter-finals of UEFA Champions League, where they will face Manchester City.
