Real Madrid clinched their 35th La Liga title with a 4-0 win over Espanyol at Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday. The result helped the Los Blancos to take an unassailable lead over second-placed Sevilla and officially dethrone 2020-21 champions Atletico Madrid, with four games to spare. Carlo Ancelotti’s side went into the clash, knowing that only a point was required to secure the title and they secured that in style, in front of their own supporters. Rodrygo netted a first-half double before Marco Asensio extended the lead early in the second half and Karim Benzema completed the drubbing with a late strike. Meanwhile Ancelotti became the first coach in history to win top five European league titles. The Italian has won titles in England, Italy, Germany, France and Spain.

Real Madrid’s goals

It took 33 minutes for the Los Blancos to open the scoring when left-back Marcelo played a cheeky little pass to Rodrygo in the left side of the box, the Brazilian took one touch and deposited the ball into the far bottom corner. Ten minutes later, Mariano Diaz stole the ball from Yangel Herrera outside the penalty area, Rodrygo dribbled forward before slotting the ball past Diego Lopez into the back of the net. After the break, the hosts didn’t take their foot off the pedal and made the score 3-0 on 55 minutes. Eduardo Camavinga released Asensio down the right channel and the Spaniard made no mistake as he slotted home over an advancing Lopez, into the roof of the net. Nine minutes from time, substitutes Vinicius Junior and Benzema combined to make the score 4-0.

Madrid’s 25th victory of the season

It was Madrid’s 25th La Liga win of the 2021-22 campaign and they have also recorded six draws and three defeats, The Los Blancos boast the best attacking record in the Spanish top flight football with 71 goals and the second-best defensive record behind Sevilla with only 29 goals conceded to date. Benzema undoubtedly has been the star-performer for the Bernabeu outfit, having netted 26 times to lead the race for the La Liga golden boot award. Apart from the Frenchman, Vinicius has also had an impressive season with 14 goals and nine assists in 34 La Liga appearances so far. Meanwhile central defender David Alaba, who joined the club last summer, gave a solid performance at the back alongside Eder Militao and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to secure 14 clean sheets.

Los Blancos well on course for a third title

Ancelotti has now won two trophies since returning to Bernabeu last summer, with success in La Liga following up their Supercopa de Espana final victory over Athletic Club in January. Madrid exited the Copa del Rey against the same opponent but are very much on course to end the season with three trophies, as they remain in the hunt for Champions League glory. Los Blancos will welcome Manchester City for the second leg of the Champions League next week, aiming overturn a one goal deficit after losing the first leg 4-3 at Etihad stadium.  ,
