Uttar Pradesh batter Rinku Singh has been a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders set-up since 2018. But due to plenty of competition for a spot in the middle-order he has not been a regular for the side even though his ability to play cameo knocks and expectational fielding has come to the notice.

Singh, featuring in his only second match in the IPL 2022, notched up a cameo knock of 23 runs off 16 deliveries to rescue the Kolkata franchise to a decent total against Delhi Capitals on Thursday while sharing an important partnership with half-centurion Nitish Rana. But their effort went in vain as KKR lost the match by four wickets.

However, every contribution from Singh remains crucial as he is still fighting for a permanent spot in the KKR XI in his fledgling career. It is also significant as the boy coming from a lower-middle class family went on to make a name for himself.

Rinku Singh chose cricket over studies

Singh’s father Khanchandra delivers LPG cylinders while one his brother works as an auto rickshaw driver. The Uttar Pradesh-native has, naturally, seen tough times during his formative years and his only chance to rescue his family came through cricket as he hardly took interest in academics. He was a ‘ninth fail’ by his own admission.

In 2015, his family was going through one of their worst phases as they were in debt of Rs. 5 lakh. The amount was beyond the reach of his working family members to repay but Singh, the third of five siblings, decided to save his modest earnings from the UP U-19 team to pay the debt.

Rinku Singh almost took up a sweeper’s job

And there was a glimmer of hope that his family found in his cricket abilities. But nothing was going to change overnight. It is, thus, that he asked one of his brothers to help him find a job where he was offered to take up the role of  a domestic worker.

Singh was not happy with the proposal. He decided to continue with cricket and this time went harder at it and notched up 692 runs with an average of 49 in a Ranji trophy season which brought him into the notice of IPL franchises.

Since then, life has changed for Singh, and for good!
