A good display from the Punjab Kings (PBKS) batters were backed up by their bowlers as they won by 12 runs against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL match at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune on Wednesday. This is the fifth straight loss for MI in the ongoing season and the nightmarish run doesn’t seem to end.

Chasing a big target of 199, MI had a good start with skipper Rohit Sharma showing promise. But his fine start didn’t materialize into a big score once again as he got out in the fourth over. In his 17-ball 28, Rohit hit three boundaries and two sixes. Mumbai smelled trouble as they lost opener Ishan Kishan (3) two balls later.

Mumbai Indians’ fight back went in vain

Dewald Brevis and Tilak Varma steadied the ship and took the score to 116 before the South African fell to a delivery from Odean Smith. ‘Baby AB’ Brevis pulled off a crucial knock of 49 from 25 balls as he hit four boundaries and five sixes.

Tilak Varma (36) carried on pretty well but a horrible mixup with Suryakumar Yadav resulted in him getting run-out. Yadav continued his good run of form as he scored 43 from 30 balls. He smashed one boundary and four sixes in his knock. Mumbai’s chances of winning their first match of the ongoing season took a big blow as they lost Kieron Pollard (10) through another run-out in the first ball of the 17th over.

Suryakumar Yadav looked like MI’s last hope but his knock came to an end after he hit a full toss from Rabada into the hands of Odean Smith. Having lost all their main batters, 22 runs of the final over proved to be a big ask for Mumbai as they succumbed to their fifth successive loss in IPL 2022.

Odean Smith picks up four wickets

The Jamaican pacer picked up the crucial wicket of the dangerous looking Dewald Brevis before dimissing three tail-enders. Kagiso Rabada managed to restrict the flow of runs and picked two wickets for 29 runs.

Mayank Agarwal, Shikhar Dhawan help PBKS post a good total

Earlier, half-centuries from skipper Mayank Agarwal and opener Shikhar Dhawan guided Punjab Kings (PBKS) to 198/5 against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2022 match at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune on Wednesday. After losing the toss and being asked to bat, PBKS made a bright start with brilliant batting displays from Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan. They stitched up a good opening partnership as Mumbai bowlers struggled for a breakthrough.

PBKS lost their first wicket in the 10th over as Murugan Ashwin nabbed the wicket of Mayank Agarwal. The Punjab captain’s 32-ball 52 had six boundaries and two sixes. His opening partner Dhawan scored 70 runs in a well-paced knock. Dhawan hit five boundaries and three sixes in his 50-ball knock. Jayadev Unadkat took the wicket of Jonny Bairstow (12) who came in after Agarwal. PBKS lost big hitter Liam Livingstone (2) in the next over to a Jasprit Bumrah yorker. The Punjab side’s run rate took a slight hit as they lost wickets in successive overs.

In the 17th over, Basil Thampi dismissed PBKS’ top scorer Dhawan as he sliced a delivery into the hands of Kieron Pollard. Quick-fire knocks from Jitesh Sharma (30) and Shahrukh Khan (15) ensured that Punjab reached a good score.

Mumbai bowlers have once again struggled to bring out their best as players except Jasprit Bumrah went for runs. Bumrah returned figures of 1/28. Basil Thampi dismissed two Punjab batsmen but was the least economical bowler.
