If at first you do not succeed, try again! This quote aptly sums up the life of Shikhar Dhawan. When he was about to make his debut against Australia in 2009, the world was at his feet. He was one of the leading run-getters in 2004 in the ICC Under-19 World Cup. 505 runs in one edition has never been bettered still He had been trained at Sonnet Club in Delhi, one of the most prestigious clubs in India. Under Tarak Sinha, he became one of the star players in the Delhi domestic circuit. He outshone people like Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, and MS Dhoni in the Ranji and Challenger Trophies in that period. In 2007, he was made captain of the Delhi team.

With so much excitement, it became obvious that Shikhar Dhawan would be the next big thing. But, on ODI debut against Australia in 2010, he was spectacularly out for 0. He was not selected for the next four years. When Virender Sehwag was dropped after two Tests against Australia, Shikhar Dhawan was called up again on the back of yet another consistent performance in domestic cricket.

When Sachin Tendulkar gifted him his cap, he had remarked about his gutsy performances in domestic cricket. That sparked Dhawan and he proceeded to dismantle Australia in the most spectacular way. He smashed a century on Test debut that too off 85 balls. It was the fastest Test century on debut in the history of the game. Dhawan ended up with 187 and his place in Indian cricket’s dominance was established.

He would go on to become one of the pillars of the game for India at the top. He formed a formidable partnership with Rohit Sharma and helped India achieve ICC Champions Trophy success in 2013. In fact, the Champions Trophy would be special for Dhawan as he became the leading run-getter in that competition twice. In the 2015 ICC World Cup, it was Dhawan’s century that ensured India had their first win against South Africa in the history of the tournament.

Even past 35, Dhawan continued to prove detractors wrong. In IPL 2020, he became the first player to hit back-to-back centuries to boost Delhi Capitals. It has been a hard journey for Shikhar Dhawan. But, when he looks back upon it, it is a journey that has achieved plenty of fulfillment.

Shikhar Dhawan International Debut

Shikhar Dhawan made his international debut in 2010 during the ODI against Australia in Vizag. In 2011, Dhawan made his T20I debut against the West Indies in Port of Spain. Two years later, he made his Test debut against Australia in Mohali.

Shikhar Dhawan International Cricket

Shikhar Dhawan etched his name in the history books by smashing a century off just 85 balls on Test debut against Australia in Mohali. After being dismissed for a duck on international debut by the same opponent in ODIs, it was sweet redemption. From that point in time, there was no looking back. In 2013, he was one of the leading run-getters in the ICC Champions Trophy as he helped India win the tournament. In that same tournament, it was the pairing of Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma that made India formidable at the top.

In fact, Shikhar Dhawan became the man for big-match tournaments, scoring over 400 runs in the 2015 ICC World Cup in Australia. It was his century against South Africa that gave India their first win against the Proteas in the World Cup. Dhawan once again topped the charts in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, smashing runs with amazing consistency. In 2019, he hit a century against Australia in the World Cup but his campaign ended because of a fractured finger.

His average and strike-rate in ODIs is remarkable. In 2018, he corrected his poor T20I record by hammering over 600 runs in the calendar year which was a new record for an Indian.

Shikhar Dhawan IPL

Shikhar Dhawan has played for Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals in his IPL playing career. He has been there since the inaugural edition in 2008. Overall, Dhawan has played 192 matches and scored 5784 runs at an average of 34. In his very first season, Dhawan hit 340 runs at an average of 37. His good start for Mumbai Indians was later dented by some poor shows until 2010. But, in 2011 and 2012, he showed his class and smashed 400 and 569 runs at an average of close to 40.

When he went to Sunrisers Hyderabad, Shikhar Dhawan formed a solid combination with David Warner. During Sunrisers Hyderabad’s title-winning year in 2016, Dhawan hit 501 runs at an average of 38. When Sunrisers Hyderabad reached the final in 2018, Dhawan was one of the top run-getters with 497 runs again at an average of 38.

Dhawan was traded from Sunrisers Hyderabad to Delhi Capitals in 2019. He created history in 2020 when he hit two back-to-back centuries, making him the first player to achieve this feat. In three editions that he has played the IPL for Delhi Capitals, he has never scored less than 500 runs.

Dhawan has had his worst year since his debut in 2010 for India. Dhawan failed to reach double figures in three innings during the Bangladesh series. He has been supported up to this point, but with a new selection committee on the way, it wouldn't be a terrible idea to shift away from the southpaw.
