IPL 2022 PBKS vs CSK: Punjab Kings beat Chennai Super Kings after Ambati Rayudu heroics

All-round PBKS beat CSK by 11 runs in the IPL 2022 on Monday to stay alive in the playoffs race.

All-round PBKS restricted CSK to 176/6 in chase at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday to clinch victory by 11 runs in the IPL 2022 contest. By virtue of the victory, the Punjab franchise took the sixth place, to stay alive in the race to the playoffs. 

Chasing a challenging target, CSK opener Ruturaj Gaikwad (30), fell short of partners on the other end as the wickets of Robin Uthappa (1), Mitchell Santner (9) and Shivam Dube (8), fell in quick succession. 

Gaikwad’s stay, meanwhile, came to an end in the 27th delivery that he faced after hitting four boundaries in his cautious innings.

Ambati Rayudu puts up a cautious effort 

However, unperturbed by the earlier dismissals, incoming batter Ambati Rayudu (78) put up a batting exhibition on show as he made the PBKS bowlers toil hard for wickets. 

He was well complimented by captain Ravindra Jadeja, from the other end, as he remained unbeaten on 21 runs off 16 deliveries. 

Rayudu perished after his significant effort of 39 deliveries which included seven boundaries and six sixes with MS Dhoni (12) failing to take CSK over the line. 

PBKS put up disciplined bowling performance

PBKS bowled well as a unit with Kagiso Rabada and Rishi Dhawan picking up two wickets each while Sandeep Sharma and Arshdeep Singh scalped one each. 

Shikhar Dhawan anchors PBKS to a challenging total

Earlier, Shikhar Dhawan (88 not out) and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (42) played brilliant individual knocks to guide Punjab Kings to 187/4. 

Asked to bat, Mayank Agarwal (18) and Dhawan, put up a 37-run stand for the opening wicket before the PBKS captain was sent packing by Maheesh Theekshana. 

Dhawan, however, continued to steer the Punjab Kings’ innings and was well supported by Sri Lanka’s Rajapaksa who played the role of a second fiddle perfectly. 

The duo forged a 110-run stand for the second wicket to set the tone for the match with Rajapaksa smashing two boundaries and as many sixes in his 32-ball knock. 

His dismissal saw England all-rounder Liam Livingstone stepping up to play a cameo of seven-ball 19 runs which included one boundary and two sixes. 

Dhawan, meanwhile, continued to add to the team’s tally from the other end as he smashed nine boundaries and two sixes in his 59-ball effort. 

CSK bowlers struggle 

West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo picked up two wickets for CSK but leaked runs at 10.50 while his spin bowling compatriot Theekshana could only scalp a wicket.
