Mark Wood, England pace bowler, will not feature in the upcoming Indian Premier League 2022. Wood was expected to play for Lucknow Super Giants. However, this scenario has now been ruled after he picked up an injury in his right elbow. This took place during the first Test against West Indies in North Sound last week as well.

Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants have received a medical update from the ECB. It clearly stated that Mark Wood has been ruled out of bowling for the time being. However, the franchise has not yet named any replacement.

Notably, Lucknow Super Giants bought Mark Wood for a whopping price of INR 7.5 crore (USD 1 million approx.) at the mega IPL auction in February in Bengaluru. However, his participation in the IPL came under the scanner. Wood walked out of the drawn first Test last week after bowling only 17 overs because of an injury. Wood, who had bowled just five overs on the third morning before going out of the field, had tried to take a fitness test also. He bowled six balls in the nets before the start of play on the fifth day,. But he had suffered “acute pain” in his injury.

An elaborate review of his injury is expected to come on Friday from the ECB as well. As far as Lucknow Super Giants are concerned, the absence of Mark Wood might alter their plans due to the limited overseas options they have.

Mark Wood the third England player to miss IPL 2022, after Jason Roy and Alex Hales

West Indies allrounder Jason Holder and Sri Lanka pacer Dushmanta Chameera are the two other overseas pace bowlers in their team. But, Holder will miss the start of the league owing to West Indies’ Test series against England which will finish only on March 28. Notably, on that day Lucknow Super Giants will play their first match against Gujarat Titans.

Earlier, former England cricketer Steve Harmison also pointed fingers at ECB for Mark Wood’s injury. He blamed the mismanagement and over-use of Mark Wood during the Ashes against Australia. “He’s frustrated as he couldn’t straighten his elbow and there’s a bit of swelling. He bowled a lot (in the Ashes) and I remember thinking that we’re going to need him further down the line,” he told TalkSPORT.

However, Mark Wood becomes the third England player to miss IPL 2022, after Jason Roy and Alex Hales pulled out because of bio-bubble fatigue as well.
