In the annals of West Indies cricket, finding a great all-rounder after Sir Gary Sobers has always been a tough challenge. West Indies were blessed with great batsmen and awesome bowlers. But, a combination of both was sometimes hard to find. Sir Vivian Richards managed to get a moderate level of success. Chris Gayle was touted as one but he did not give much attention to his bowling. But, when one looks to Jason Holder, West Indies have finally managed to get the one pace-bowling all-rounder that they always desired.
His tall height plus his grit with the bat have made him an asset in the cricket world. It is no wonder that in 2019, Jason Holder was declared the best all-rounder in world cricket by the International Cricket Council. It was a fitting reward for an individual who has always given his all for the West Indies.
When it comes to bat and ball in the last couple of years, Jason Holder has dominated, unlike any individual. No one can forget his 202 while batting at No.8 to give West Indies their biggest triumph against England. For someone who was thrust the captaincy at the age of 23, Jason Holder was valued by many veterans who praised him for his level-headedness. Results may not have gone Jason Holder’s way, but he is a proven match-winner. Recently, he joined Lasith Malinga, Rashid Khan, Curtis Campher as the only bowlers who have taken four consecutive wickets in Twenty20 Internationals. This feat, also against England in the 2022 T20I series in Barbados, has cemented Holder’s legacy as one of the best. His Man of the Series Award is a culmination of all the great efforts put in during the last three years.
Jason Holder made his international ODI debut against Australia during West Indies’ tour Down Under in 2013. He made his T20I debut against New Zealand in Wellington in 2014. In that same year, he made his Test debut against New Zealand in Barbados.
Jason Holder currently averages 30 with the bat in Tests and 27 with the ball. This puts him in an elite category of players. Even after 53 Tests, the fact that he has been able to maintain this level of consistency is simply magnificent. If there is one opponent that he has hurt the most, it is England.
His 202 was the highest by a No.8 player and he shared a stand of 295 to give West Indies an unlikely win. In Twenty20 Internationals, he recently took 5/17 which included a double hat-trick against them in Barbados. Holder has been on the receiving end of plenty of punishment, especially from AB de Villiers. When the maestro hit his fastest 50, 100, and 150 in 2015 against the West Indies, Jason Holder has suffered a lot from him.
But, his grit and determination have ensured that Jason Holder is one of the best players despite all the setbacks. Results may not have been too consistent. But, Jason Holder has been a pillar of strength in tough times for West Indies cricket.
Jason Holder was picked for his base price of USD 20,000 by Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2013. Although he played six games, he did not impress much. Jason Holder was picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2014 but did not get many games. After a stint with Kolkata Knight Riders, Jason Holder was a replacement for Mitchell Marsh in Sunrisers Hyderabad side for IPL 2020 and 2021. Holder played a big role in Sunrisers Hyderabad eliminating Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2020 Eliminator Clash
