New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson (4/28) displayed brilliant bowling performance for GT to restrict DC to 157/9 and clinch victory by 14 runs in the IPL 2022 contest at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune on Saturday. The victory helped the Ahmedabad-franchise maintain a perfect record with two consecutive victories in their debut season.

Chasing a target of 172 runs, Delhi Capitals lost their top-order, Prithvi Shaw (10), Tim Siefert (3) and Mandeep Singh (18) in a hurry.

Rishabh Pant fights back for Delhi Capitals

However, Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant (43), played his natural game to keep his side in the leather hunt. His 29-ball knock was laced with seven hits to the fence but a poorly judged pull shot ended his stay at the crease.

Pant was well complimented by Lalit Yadav (25) as the duo forged an important 61-run stand for the fourth wicket. Yadav smashed one six and two boundaries in his 22-ball knock.

Later, Rovman Powell (20), chipped in with an important cameo off 12 deliveries while Kuldeep Yadav showed that he can bat with his unbeaten knock off 14 runs off as many deliveries.

Ferguson provided crucial breakthroughs at regular intervals of time he ran through the DC top and middle-order. GT captain Hardik Pandya used him well to get the best out of him.

Veteran India fast bowler Mohammed Shami, meanwhile, missed out on a hat-trick as he scalped two wickets in the 18th over.

Shubman Gill records his highest IPL score

Earlier, a sensational knock from youngster Shubman Gill took GT to 171/6 against DC.

After losing the toss and put in to bat, Gujarat Titans lost Mathew Wade in the first over with only two runs on the board. Gill, however, looked in fine form and scored all across the park.

Gill’s 84 off 46 deliveries had six boundaries and four sixes. After losing opening partner Wade early, Gill was joined by Vijay Shankar and the duo tried to steady the innings. But in the seventh over, Shankar (13) was bowled by Kuldeep Yadav’s delivery that left him puzzled.

Pandya (31) came in next and hit four boundaries before getting out to Khaleel Ahmed’s bowling. Gill continued his onslaught as he took the Delhi bowler to the cleaners. In the 18th over, Gill was dismissed by Khaleel Ahmed as he was caught in the deep by Axar Patel.

Following this, David Miller (20) and Rahul Tewatia (14) helped with cameo roles as GT set up a decent total.

Bangladesh paceman Mustafizur Rahman took three wickets and was the most economical bowler for DC as he returned figures of 3/23.
