India and CSK fast bowler Deepak Chahar, who was ruled out of the IPL 2022 on Saturday, will be sidelined for at least three months due to his L5 injury in back, according to a report in Cricbuzz.

The span of recovery puts his participation at the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia from October under real threat. He last made an appearance in competitive cricket back in February 2022.

According to a letter written to the BCCI and the CSK managements by the physios of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, where the player was undergoing rehab, Chahar has an L5 injury in his back and it will take a lot of time for recovery. The pacer will have to rest for a mandatory period of six weeks before starting his rehab.

“After a hamstring injury (sustained during a T20 game at the Eden in Kolkata against West Indies), he had been undergoing rehab at the NCA hoping to join his IPL franchise in the second half. But he developed back pain while bowling and tests have revealed that he has L5 issue in his lower back,” a CSK source told Cricbuzz.

IPL 2022: CSK have not sought any replacement for Deepak Chahar

The Indian fast bowler has been an integral part of the CSK set up. He was bought for INR crores 14 crores and in his absence the defending champions have made a forgettable start to the season.

However, the CSK management has clarified that they have not sought a replacement, so far.

“We have left it to the team management and they have not come back to us so far. We do not find an Indian bowler of Deepak’s caliber,” franchise CEO Kasi Viswanathan said to Cricbuzz.

“The BCCI has insured IPL contracts of all the players and it has also been paying the premium. Deepak will recover most if not the entire Rs 14 crore from insurance,” a BCCI official said.
