A late surge from Lalit Yadav (48 not out) and Axar Patel (38 not out) guided Delhi Capitals to a four-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2022 contest at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday. Chasing a target of 178 runs on a quick outfield, Delhi Capitals openers Prithvi Shaw (38) and Tim Seifert (21) forged a 30-run opening stand, before the latter was sent packing.

Shaw, however, continued to anchor the innings in his 24 ball stay which saw him hit four boundaries and two sixes. He, however, failed to find support on the other end as — Mandeep Singh (0) and Rishabh Pant (1) — were sent back cheaply before the opener lost his wicket.

Lalit Yadav and Axar Patel rescue Delhi Capitals to win

Unperturbed by the dismissals, middle-order batter Lalit Yadav paced his innings beautifully, as he exchanged strikes and hit the odd balls to the boundary to maintain the scoring rate.

Yadav also found support in Shardul Thakur (22 off 11 deliveries) and Patel as he changed gears towards the end to help Delhi Capitals march towards victory. His unbeaten innings of 38 deliveries was laced with four boundaries and two hits over the fence.

Patel, meanwhile, took the attack on his opponents from the word go as he slammed two boundaries and three sixes in his 17-ball undefeated innings.

Basil Thampi effort goes in-vain

Mumbai Indians medium pacer Basil Thampi was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up three crucial scalps but ended up on the losing side. He failed to find support from pace-ace Jasprit Bumrah who went wicketless in the match.

Murugan Ashwin, meanwhile, picked up two wickets while Tymal Mills scalped one.

Ishan Kishan justifies his big-money price tag

Earlier, opener Ishan Kishan (81 not out) played a whirlwind knock to take Mumbai Indians to 177/5 against Delhi Capitals. Asked to bat, the opening pair of Rohit Sharma (41) and Kishan forged a stand of 67 runs on a quick outfield with shorter boundaries. The Mumbai Indians captain smashed four boundaries and two hits over the top in his 32-ball innings.

The left-handed opener, who was fetched for a big sum by the Mumbai franchise at the IPL mega auction, continued to play his natural game despite losing his opening partner.

Incoming batter Anmolpreet Singh (8), however, failed to add much to the tally of the team while Tilak Varma made a short but sweet debut as he notched up 22 runs off 15 deliveries.

Kieron Pollard (3) and Tim David (12) could not last long at the crease but Kishan made sure to pile on the misery on the opposition bowlers from the other end. His prolific 48-ball unbeaten knock was laced with 11 boundaries and two hits over the fence.

Mumbai Indians’ tally was also helped on by Daniel Sams (7 not out) who hit a six in the two balls that he faced in the innings.

Delhi Capitals wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav made a bright start to the IPL 2022 as he dismissed Rohit, Anmolpreet and Pollard to pick up three wickets for 18 runs. His compatriot and fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed, meanwhile, returned figures of two for 27.
