Akshar or Axar? This was the first confusion when he rose to prominence in Indian cricket. He was at pains to point out that in his passport, it was Akshar. But, the spelling error permanently made him Axar Patel. When he had finished the 2013/14 Ranji Trophy season, he was one of the upcoming stars in the domestic circuit. For Gujarat that year, he made 369 runs at an average of 46 with 29 wickets at an average of 23. His exploits gave him an IPL contract for Mumbai Indians. He did not play a single game for them in 2013 but he joined Kings XI Punjab and became one of their ace players in 2014. His 16 wickets were impressive but it was his economy rate of 6.22 that made Axar Patel a force to be reckoned with.

He was fast-tracked into the Indian team for the series against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe where he had limited impact. The low point for Axar came in IPL 2016. Tasked with defending 23 runs in the final over in the wooden spoon clash with Rising Pune Supergiant, Axar found a rampant MS Dhoni at the peak of his finishing powers. Dhoni pummeled three sixes, including two in the last two balls as Axar Patel stock nosedived.

He disappeared for three years when he was suddenly called into the Indian team for the Test series against England in 2021. Immediately, he made Test cricket look very easy. In every match that he played against England, he ended up bamboozling them. Axar ended with 11 wickets in Ahmedabad and a five-wicket haul on debut to end with 27 wickets at an average of 10. Later in the year, he hit fifty and also took yet another five-wicket haul against New Zealand. In the IPL, he has been one of the key players in Delhi Capitals’ resurgence, maintaining an excellent economy rate and chipping in with the bat at crucial times.

Axar Patel International Debut

Axar Patel made his international debut in an ODI against Bangladesh in 2014 in Mirpur. His T20I debut came a year later against Zimbabwe in Harare. Six years later, he made his Test debut against England in Chennai in February 2021.

Axar Patel in International Cricket

Axar Patel has had limited success in ODIs and T20Is. In 38 ODIs, he has taken 38 wickets but his economy rate is an impressive 4.43. He has often been accused of bowling too quickly and lacking enough variations. In Twenty20 Internationals, he has 13 wickets from 15 games but his economy rate is 6.69. But, it is in the Test arena that Axar Patel has found remarkable success.

In the series against England, he became the ninth bowler to take a five-wicket haul on debut. But, in the following Tests in Ahmedabad, he took 11 wickets as the Test ended in two days. He ended that series with 27 wickets in three matches at a staggering average of 10. It is in the series against England as well as against New Zealand that has seen Axar as one of the best players currently in India.

Axar Patel IPL

Axar Patel has been in the IPL ever since 2014. After being included in the Mumbai Indians team in 2013, he did not get a game. After that, he became one of the pillars of the Kings XI Punjab team. His best year was 2014 in which he took 17 wickets at an economy rate of 6.13. In 2019, he moved to the Delhi Capitals and has since become one of their best bowlers in the middle overs. His economy rate of 6.4 and 6.65 in 2020 and 2021 are one of the best among most bowlers. In 109 IPL games, he has taken 95 wickets.
