The Mark Wood elbow injury which ruled him out from representing Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2022, followed by Bangladesh fast bowler Taskin Ahmed being barred from obtaining a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) by his board, and the subsequent recruitment of Australia quick Andrew Tye looks nothing short of a blessing in disguise for the new IPL franchise.

Tye has not been a regular feature at the lucrative tournament but a productive one. His past records in the IPL makes him an integral part of the Lucknow-franchise. It is, more so, because the franchise also lacks international bowling experience in their set up and the 35-year-old experienced campaigner will be expected to make an instant impact.

The Australian can be largely dependent on as he knows the league well and has proven ability to add to.

Specialist death bowler

Lucknow Super Giants would be relying on young Indian talents including the likes of Ravi Bishnoi and Avesh Khan to pick wickets at regular intervals.

However, with Tye in fray now, he will be expected to bat the flow of runs in the death overs, something that he specialises in.

The Australian played a crucial role in Perth Scorchers title run this season as he picked up 3/15 in the final match of the Big Bash League (BBL). It will be his ability to mix up the slower balls and yorkers which would prove to be handy in the IPL as well.

The many firsts in IPL and the purple cap

Tye is best known for becoming the first bowler to pick up a hat-trick on IPL debut while playing for Gujarat Lions. He was bowling in the final over of the Rising Pune Supergiant innings, once again, justifying his impeccable presence at the death.

He removed Ankit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary and Shardul Thakur off consecutive deliveries to complete his hat-trick and register a five-wicket haul in the match. It was also the first five-wicket haul in IPL 2017.

Later, in 2018, Tye’s stakes rose in the lucrative and he was bought by Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). He displayed his bowling brilliance for the Mohali-franchise, as well, by becoming the first bowler to pick up three four-wicket haul in a season and subsequently clinched the purple cap.

Clears long boundaries with ease

Tye might be a match-winner with the ball but his ability to win a match with the bat remains questionable. He averages nearly 15 in the shortest format of the game but will be expected to add few sixes to the team’s tally as he is known for clearing long boundaries with ease.

That said, all eyes will be on Tye, when LSG open their IPL 2022 campaign  against Gujarat Titans (GT) on March 28.
