Michigan Wolverines will take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the NCAA USA on November 18. Bryce Brodzinski, a senior forward for No. 1 Minnesota, scored twice in the third period within 1:06 of one another to help his team defeat No. 8 Penn State 3-1 and earn a series tie. The Golden Gophers (8-4-0, 4-2-0 Big Ten) recovered from a shocking 4-2 setback on Friday with two more goals from junior forward Mason Nevers and 38 stops from senior goalie Justen Close. Jaxon Nelson, a senior forward, had two assists. Christian Sarlo, a junior forward, scored a goal for the Nittany Lions (10-2-0, 4-2-0 Big Ten). Liam Souliere, a junior goalkeeper, made 29 stops. After last weekend’s match versus former No. 1 Michigan, PSU has now split two consecutive games.
Xander Lamppa kept the play going and found Sarlo in the slot for an easy goal to start the scoring early in the first. By deflecting Mike Koster’s one-timer from the point on the power play, Nevers made it 1-1 late in the second. With 13:05 remaining in regulation, Brodzinski gave Minnesota their first lead of the weekend with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle, blocker-side, after Nelson had kept the puck in the zone. Just over a minute later, he added insurance with a one-timer off a feed from Nelson, who displayed some impressive forechecking below the dots by outmuscling a defender before passing to Brodzinski. Next weekend, Penn State will play Michigan State, who recently defeated No. 10 Ohio State in a sweep. For Minnesota, things won’t get any easier as they travel to Ann Arbor for a series against Michigan.
