Sacred Heart Pioneers will take on the Merrimack Warriors in the NCAA USA on November 18 at Webster Bank Arena, Bridgeport. Saturday’s Atlantic Hockey match between RIT and Sacred Heart ended in a 3-1 victory for the Tigers thanks to two goals from senior defenseman Gianfranco Cassaro and one each from sophomore forward Carter Wilkie. Following a 3-1 victory on Friday night to open the series between the top two teams in the Atlantic Hockey rankings heading into the week, RIT finished the two-game sweep of the Pioneers. Marcus Joughin’s goal from the left face-off circle through a throng in front of Tiger sophomore goalkeeper Tommy Scarfone gave Sacred Heart the lead with 8:42 remaining in the opening frame. In order to take the lead, RIT scored a pair of almost identical power-play goals in the second period. For both of Cassaro’s near-post shots past Pioneer goalkeeper Luke Lush, Wilkie, and junior defenseman Aiden Hansen-Bukata cycled the ball to Cassaro in the right face-off circle. With 31.1 seconds remaining in regulation, Wilkie added an empty-net goal to complete the scoring by backhanding a puck from the opposing blue line.
