Shamilia Connell, the West Indies pace bowler, collapsed on the field during the 47th over of Bangladesh’s run-chase in the World Cup. She was needed for the medical staff to take her out of the ground, even the play was halted for a while. It wasn’t looking good, and while her team-mates were concerned, Stafanie Taylor, the captain, said “it was time for us to regroup”.

At that point, the match was on an edge with Bangladesh’s last-wicket pair was trying to win the game as 13 were needed off 19 balls.

“A bit worrying seeing her going down like that. She is a fighter, not sure what is wrong with her but hopefully she is all right,” said Hayley Matthews after the match, who also won the Player of the Match. “She is a strong girl and we’re backing her to get well soon.”

However, it was after the fifth ball of the 47th over that Shamilia Connell has collapsed while fielding at midwicket. Her team-mates rushed to her and the medical staff soon entered the field. After what looked like preliminary treatment, Connell managed to get up and went to the waiting ambulance on her own as well. Play resumed soon after, and Stafanie Taylor sealed a final-over win by picking up the last wicket.

“The batters need to come to the party and we are not consistent” – Stafanie Taylor

“It was sad to see her go down,” Stafanie Taylor said of Connell at the presentation. “But we need to look at the bright side – it was time for us to regroup, we came back and changed the momentum.”

However, Shamilia Connell bowled three wicketless overs, where she gave away 15 runs as well.

After the win, Stafanie Taylor said, “The batters need to come to the party and we are not consistent. We have to be consistent if we are to compete in this competition. Our batting order is long, we have to come together and win games. Aly (Fletcher) was brilliant. It was her first game back after birth and she was brilliant. It is something we need to talk as a batting group, where we are and where we need to be, there’s no two ways about it. We didn’t perform well since the India game and that’s a concern for us, we can’t really go through the tournament like this.”
