Jhulan Goswami picked up the wicket of Katey Martin and equaled the record for the most wickets in the history of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022.
Jhulan Goswami and Mithali Raj are the two veterans who have revolutionized the way how Indian women’s cricket has evolved. While Mithali Raj is the leading run-getter in the history of ODIs, Jhulan Goswami is the ultimate bowler in ODIs. During the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 clash against New Zealand in Seddon Park, Hamilton, Jhulan Goswami created history and enhanced her reputation as one of the best. Pooja Vastrakar had taken four wickets in a splendid display of bowling as she took 4/34. Backed by Rajeshwari Gayakwad’s 2/46, India managed to restrict New Zealand to 260/9. Amelia Kerr and Amy Satterthwaite were the stars with 50 and 75 respectively.
But, it was Jhulan Goswami who stole the show. Katey Martin had struck some lusty blows to help New Zealand go past 250. But, in the final over, Goswami cleaned up Martin with a wonderful delivery to create history. Jhulan Goswami’s wicket of Martin was her 39th in the history of World Cups and it is a joint record. Her tally of 39 matches Australia’s Lynette Fullston who took 39 wickets in 20 matches. While Fullston was a slow left-arm orthodox bowler, Jhulan Goswami is a pacer. Here is a list of the all-time leading wicket-takers in the Women’s World Cup.
Player | Matches | Wickets | Average | Economy Rate | Five-Wicket Haul |
Lyn Fullston | 20 | 39 | 11.94 | 2.22 | 2 |
Jhulan Goswami | 30 | 39 | 20.2 | 3.27 | 0 |
Carole Hodges | 24 | 37 | 14.86 | 2.35 | 0 |
Clare Taylor | 26 | 36 | 13.94 | 2.10 | 0 |
Cathryn Fitzpatrick | 25 | 33 | 18.9 | 2.75 | 0 |
While Jhulan Goswami could very well go on and become the leading wicket-taker in the Women’s World Cup, her ODI contribution is entering new ground. In her 20-year career, Jhulan Goswami is on the cusp of becoming the first woman bowler in the history of the game to play 200 ODIs as well as take 250 wickets. Jhulan needs just three more games to get to 200 while she is only two wickets away from reaching 250. The Bengal pacer will become the first individual in women’s cricket history to reach 250 ODI wickets. Here are the leading wicket-takers in Women’s ODIs.

Cathryn Fitzpatrick | 109 | 180 | 16.79 | 3.01 | 4 |

Ellyse Perry | 123 | 157 | 25.01 | 4.35 | 3 |
Sana Mir | 120 | 151 | 24.27 | 3.7 | 1 |
Her average of 21.75 might make it slightly high, considering that most bowlers in the list have an average of just over or under 20. But, there can be no denying the fact that Jhulan Goswami has been the torch-bearer for women’s cricket in India along with Mithali Raj. While Mithali has played international cricket ever since 1999, Goswami has been in the side ever since 2002. For a pacer to have such a long career is a testament to her commitment and fitness.

At 38 years of age, this is the last World Cup for Jhulan and even for Mithali Raj. With injuries piling up, India would be hoping to give both their stalwarts a befitting farewell.
