Hailing from Simdega district in Jharkhand, India, Salima has made a name for herself internationally through her exceptional skills. Born to a family of agriculturists on December 27, 2001, she was introduced to the sport by her father, who was also a hockey player. She first rose to prominence when she captained the Indian junior team to a silver medal at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires in 2018.
With the senior national team in 2017, Salima Tete made her first appearance in a series against Belarus. Since her debut, she has since become an integral part of the national squad. She contributed to India’s victory over the United States in the FIH Olympic Qualifiers. Her defensive skills were recognized when she represented India at the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympics in 2021, where India achieved an outstanding fourth-place finish.
Following in the footsteps of fellow Jharkhand native Nikki Pradhan, Salima Tete etched her name in Indian sports history as the second Olympian from her state. She continued her streak of impressive performances at the Women’s Asia Cup in 2022, where India clinched third place. She then played crucial roles in India’s third-place finish at the FIH Hockey Women’s Pro League 2021-22 and the team’s bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.
The year 2023 saw Salima move upwards in her career as she played a pivotal role in securing the bronze medal for India at the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou, China. Shortly after, she was phenomenal at the Hockey Women’s Champions Trophy 2023 in Ranchi, Jharkhand. She not only contributed to India’s sweeping 4-0 victory over Japan but also emerged as the second-leading scorer for her team, netting five goals, just one shy of teammate Sangita Kumari’s tally.
