Lalremsiami Hmarzote, is a rising star in the Indian women’s field hockey team, who plays as a forward and at times, as a midfielder on the national squad. Affiliated with the Sports Authority of India at the club level, she marked her presence as a prominent member of the Indian team that competed at the World Cup in 2018. Lalremsiami scripted history at the Asian Games 2018 by becoming the first athlete from Mizoram to clinch an Asian Games medal, winning the silver medal.
Belonging to a family in Kolasib, located near Aizawl in Mizoram, Lalremsiami’s father was an ex-serviceman who later returned to farming, and her mother is a housewife. Discovered by the Mizoram government’s hockey academy at the age of 11, she moved to the National Hockey Academy in New Delhi in 2016. Despite the initial language struggle, she learned Hindi with support from her teammates who nicknamed her ‘Siami’.
Her journey in competitive hockey began with the under-18 Indian team at the Asia Cup in 2016. After some time, she was elevated to the senior team camp by the then-junior team coach Baljit Singh Saini. She played for the under-18 squad in the Asian Youth Olympic Games qualifier, where the team finished as runners-up. In the tournament, Hmarzote showcased her prowess by scoring seven goals across five games.
Her senior team journey began with a tour of Europe in September 2017, followed by her participation in India’s successful Asia Cup run later that year, which ended a 13-year title drought. She scored her inaugural goal in a 10–0 group-stage victory over Singapore. At the Asian Champions Trophy in 2018, Lalremsiami’s total playtime was 31 minutes over five matches, where she scored twice, including a critical equalizer, earning her the ‘U-21 rising star award’ in which the Indian team clinched the silver medal.
At 18, Lalremsiami was the youngest player on the squad for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2018, where she scored in the crossover match against Italy. At the Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta, Hmarzote contributed four goals, including a hat-trick in a record-setting 21–0 win over Kazakhstan. Despite an impressive performance throughout the games, India finished with a silver medal after a narrow defeat in the final against Japan. Her success at the Asian Games 2018 not only brought pride to her state but also marked Mizoram’s first medalist in the history of the games.
