When Boby Singh Dhami was just ten years old, his mother was forced to make the difficult decision to send their youngest son, Boby, to live with his maternal uncle in Tanakpur, a picturesque town in the heart of the Kumaon range in Uttarakhand, following a sad accident involving Boby’s driver father, Shyam Singh Dhami. Prakash, Boby’s uncle, used to play hockey at the national level. When Boby was younger, he would go with his uncle to the ground where he taught hockey to neighborhood children. Boby found himself drawn to the game because of the talent and perseverance it demanded.

My mother chose to send me away to live with my uncle because my parents could not even afford for me to have an education. Boby said, “Looking back, I realize that if that accident hadn’t happened, I probably would never have played hockey. It was obviously difficult to deal with that situation as a child.”
Boby Singh Dhami began playing hockey in 2019 and was selected for the Junior India team as an alternate for the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, in 2021. His choice was supported by a strong performance in the Sultan of Johor Cup. Boby got an opportunity to show off his skills at the largest quadrennial competition for U21 thanks to an injury to Maninder Singh, who was then considered to be the next big thing in Indian hockey.
