The UEFA Euro Qualifier between Turkey and Latvia will occur at the Konya Büyükşehir Arena on Monday at 12:15 am IST.
Turkey is in within touching distance of qualifying for Euro 2024 as they prepare to host Latvia on Sunday. Both nations meet in Konya after upsetting the odds to claim victory on Thursday. Vincenzo Montella’s side need just one point to secure their place at next year’s finals. The hosts moved atop Group D with a 1-0 win at Croatia on Thursday. Turkey had never previously lost a European qualifier played on Croatian soil and had won 2-0 in Turkey earlier this year. So, former Adana Demirspor coach Vincenzo Montella was not expected to start his international management career with a win. However, failed its previous track record to notch up a victory in Croatia.
Meanwhile, Latvia recorded their first win of the qualifying campaign on Thursday. Latvia defeated Armenia 2-0 at home earlier. Jānis Ikaunieks opened the scoring in the 39th minute before Daniels Balodis doubled their lead in the 68th. The win came too late, though as they have already been eliminated from the race for the playoffs. Nonetheless, they will look to build on their last win and delay the inevitable for Turkey. However, the Latvians are out of contention for Euro 2024 and will play for pride against Turkey.
Interestingly, Turkey has drawn all three home meetings against Latvia. Naturally, the Turkish team will look to seal that with a win in front of their home team. Turkey head into the game with their heads high after securing a win over Croatia. At home, they are unbeaten in last four qualifying games, keeping two clean sheets, and are strong favourites. Latvia, meanwhile, have just one win in eight games across competitions. They have not scored in two of their last three away games, conceding eight times. Considering the home advantage for Turkey, the Turkish team is expected to steamroll the Latvian side.
Turkey’s probable starting lineup: Cakir, Kadioglu, Akaydin, Demiral, Ozkacar, Yuksek, Kahveci, Kokcu, Calhanoglu, Akturkoglu, Yilmaz
Latvia‘s probable starting lineup: Ozols, Savalnieks, Balodis, Dubra, Sorokins, Emsis, Tobers, Jaunzems, J. Ikaunieks, D. Ikaunieks; Uldrikis
