In January 2023, Cristiano Ronaldo made a significant move to Al Nassr, a team in the Saudi Pro League (SPL). His presence in the league has had a profound impact, attracting the attention of other renowned players who are now contemplating joining SPL due to the lucrative wages and endorsement opportunities provided by the clubs. The current Ballon d’or recipient, Karim Benzema, is also set to join Ronaldo in the Middle East. Recently, he engaged in discussions with representatives from Al Ittihad at the Four Seasons Hotel in Madrid to complete the necessary arrangements for his transfer and the club later announced his signing. Karim Benzema is expected to earn around €200m per year.

Since Saudi Arabia does not enforce financial fair play regulations, clubs in the country do not face the same restrictions as their European counterparts regarding spending limits. As the summer transfer window in Saudi Arabia spans from June to September, clubs in Europe now have the opportunity to view the Saudi Pro League as a “dumping ground” for Financial Fair Play (FFP) compliance. It serves as an attractive destination for players demanding high wages that Western clubs may be unwilling or unable to match, allowing these European clubs to adhere to football’s financial regulations.

Fabrizio Romano speaks on potential transfers

According to Fabrizio Romano, there are reports suggesting that many prominent players are being linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League. Messi is set to be renewed over the summer, with the World Cup winner destined to join Al-Hilal on a deal that is worth €400 million net per season, plus commercial deals. It is believed that the Argentina international could earn up to €1 billion over the course of a two-year contract.

Among others is Sergio Ramos, who recently confirmed his departure from PSG. Romano reveals that Ramos has already been in contact with clubs in the Pro League regarding a potential move. Additionally, there are indications that two Barcelona players, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, who both ended their contracts, are being strongly linked with free transfers to join their former teammate Lionel Messi in Saudi Arabia. It’s worth noting that both players have received proposals from European clubs as well.

Fabrizio Romano has also identified two Chelsea players who are attracting interest in the transfer market. According to Romano, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and N’Golo Kante have been mentioned as potential targets. However, Romano emphasized that the situation regarding Kante, in particular, seems to be nearing completion, while Aubameyang is more inclined to continue his career in Europe. In addition to the Chelsea duo, Iago Aspas, a former Liverpool player currently representing Celta Vigo, and Alexis Sanchez, who had a productive season with Marseille in Ligue 1, are also rumored to be potential additions to the Saudi Pro League alongside Benzema and Ronaldo in the upcoming summer transfer window.
