Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp are going through a very tough and challenging time in the Premier League currently. The reigning FA Cup winners occupy the ninth spot in the league table with just 29 points so far from 19 games. For a club of Liverpool’s stature, finding themselves in this position in January is just horrific. To add to their woes, they have to face the defending European champions, Real Madrid in the round of 16 stage in the Champions League. This campaign could very well end without any silverware for the Merseyside outfit and undoubtedly some additions are needed.

One of the main reasons for the sudden decline in Liverpool’s win rate and form has been due to decline in the performances of their midfield. Except Thiago, no other midfielder has been able to step up consistently for Liverpool. Naby Keita, just like in the previous seasons suffers from a lack of confidence. Jordan Henderson is battling age woes unable to put up the effort like previous seasons. Fabinho and Arthur have suffered from constant injury woes throughout the season. Whereas, the likes of Curtis Jones and Stefan Bajcetic lack the experience at the top level. Various rumours have emerged linking Liverpool with several potent midfield options. Let’s have a look at some of them.

Jude Bellingham

Without a doubt, Jude Bellingham is the hottest property in European football right now. The 19 year old has made a big name for himself playing for Borussia Dortmund in Germany. His performances at the biggest stages and the biggest games haven’t gone unnoticed and several big clubs are already in advanced negotiations for them. Liverpool are one of them with Jurgen Klopp eager to bring the former Birmingham City man at his disposal. Bellingham will be a good fit with the existing system at Liverpool. However, they will face big competition from Real Madrid who are also in advanced talks to sign Bellingham.

Enzo Fernandez

Before the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in December, Liverpool were regarded by many as the front runners for the Argentine prodigy, Enzo Fernandez. The talented midfielder from Benfica has caught Europe by storm ever since arriving from River Plate. His extraordinary performances at the World Cup played a key role in Argentina being crowned the world champions. However, unfortunately for Liverpool that meant that his price inflated by many times in the market. Chelsea, switched to a higher gear and were one step away from securing Fernandez’s signature. If the 22 year old continues to stay at Benfica till the summer then Liverpool will certainly fancy their chances to arrive at a deal with him.

Matheus Nunes

Perhaps the midfield target that is the closest and most likely to arrive at Liverpool is Matheus Nunes. The 24 year old arrived at his current club, Wolverhampton Wanderers from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2022. After some initial difficulties settling in English football, Nunes finally looks to have found his feet and has been delivering consistently key performances for Wolves. What makes Nunes a more realistic option is that he will arrive at a considerably lower price than other midfield options for Jurgen Klopp’s side. Many transfer experts and reporters have claimed that the Merseyside outfit are in with a good chance of signing Matheus Nunes.
