After MLS teams spent the last month making the Leagues Cup their top priority, league action resumes this weekend. The New York Red Bulls get back from the break with a match against D.C. United. Ironically, both teams were eliminated by the Philadelphia Union in the Leagues Cup. But now both clubs have to quickly refocus with this match having huge ramifications in the playoff race. The Red Bulls certainly enter this match as the more desperate team. They currently sit four points behind D.C. United, who hold the final spot in the Eastern Conference to play in the Wild Card Round. At the same time, D.C. United is five points out of a spot to avoid the Wild Card Round altogether. A win for United would do wonders for their playoff hopes whereas New York needs three points from this match to avoid falling further behind in the playoff race.

They don’t have a lot of offensive firepower, so getting points from this match will require a strong defensive effort.
The good news for the Red Bulls is that D.C. has had similar problems this year. Including matches in the Leagues Cup, United has scored just one goal in the team’s last four matches. However, they do have a bonafide match winner in Christian Benteke, who leads the club with eight goals in 22 matches this season. Much like the Red Bulls, D.C. isn’t particularly stout defensively either. That should allow both teams to create some scoring opportunities. But the result of the game will come down to what team can finish its chances better, which could favor Benteke and D.C. United.
