Manchester United will be keen to build on the positivity they gained during the 2022-23 Premier League campaign. A lot changed at the club last season, with plenty of incomings and outgoings. Besides, the team also had a new manager in Erik ten Hag. Not a lot was expected from the side and the disappointing start they made only added to the supporters’ concern. However, ten Hag did excellently to overturn the club’s fortunes.

The Red Devils then went on an impressive run, which saw them turn Old Trafford into a fortress. Manchester United overcame whatever challenge that was in their way to finish in an unexpected third spot in the Premier League table. Along the way, United also won a trophy in the EFL Cup and came close to adding another but lost to rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final. They also went deep in the Europa League campaign.

In the upcoming season, Erik ten Hag will be keen to build on the positive feeling and help United improve upon their performances. They have started by investing early in the summer transfer window to bring in a talented young midfielder in the form of Mason Mount. The English international had been at Chelsea from a young age and has already won some important trophies. Mount is a regular goal threat from midfield, but most notably, he has been lauded by many for his exceptional work rate.

Why Erik ten Hag wanted Mason Mount?

Manger Erik ten Hag, speaking to MUTV, has now outlined the reason behind bringing Mason Mount to Old Trafford. “I’m sure he will contribute to the success of United because he is a quality player. His vision is to play the offensive [midfield role]. But also he wants to be multi-functional, he wants to be complete,” Ten Hag responded to a question by former United defender Ronny Johnsen.

“When you’re playing in midfield, you have to attack, but you also you have to defend. I’m sure he will bring dynamism into our game and that was one of our analysis conclusions we made after last season. We need [to be] more dynamic in the midfield department.” Speaking about Mount joining the team early in the window, ten Hag said, “That’s a big advantage. You always hope, as a manager, that you have the players in the first moment because then, across the pre-season, you can work on the routines and our way of play.”
