Manchester United full-back Brandon Williams has completed a loan move to newly-promoted Norwich City, the clubs confirmed on Monday. Williams was unlikely to get many minutes on the pitch with United as they already have a number of players in the full-back positions. The United player has signed a season-long loan with the Canaries and will wear the number 21 shirt. Defence is one of the primary positions Norwich needed to fix if they want to stay up in the top division this time. With Williams, they are getting a player who has experience playing in the Premier League and in European competitions. It certainly looks like a great addition to the squad on paper.

“It feels very different. It’s the first time I’ve ever played for a different club before but I’m just really excited to get started, meet everybody and get my season going,” Williams said in his first interview as a Norwich player. “It’s a massive club and I like the way they play. I’ve watched them over the years and seen how they play,” he added. The young full-back then went on to explain how Norwich’s style of play attracted him to the club.

“The club like to play out from the back and play football. That really inspired me to come here, and I think that the head coach can really improve me as a player,” he said. “Everyone has been so welcoming. I’ve really enjoyed my time here already and I can’t wait to meet everybody. I’ve just got a feeling it’ll be a good year,” Williams added.

AN EXPERIENCED PLAYER

Williams made his debut for the Manchester United first team when he came on as a substitute against Rochdale in the EFL Cup on September 25, 2019. A week later, he made his first senior start for the club against Dutch club AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League. The full-back made his Premier League debut against Liverpool in October 2019, and he made his first league start for United against Brighton and Hove Albion on November 10, 2019. He scored his first goal for the club in a draw against Sheffield United in December 2019.

Norwich manager Daniel Farke thanked United for letting them have a chance to work with Williams and said that the player was an exciting prospect and one full of potential. “We’re really happy that we have been able to bring Brandon in. This is an exciting deal for all parties, and we thank Manchester United for allowing us the opportunity to work with Brandon,” he said. “Brandon is a young player full of potential. He has already proven that he can perform on the top level and that he is capable of playing for Manchester United. He has many good skills and qualities,” the Norwich manager added.

“We wanted to bring someone in who was capable of playing in the full-back positions to strengthen our squad. Brandon has played a lot at left-back for Manchester United, but we know he is also capable of playing on the right side, too,” Farke continued. “With Dimitris Giannoulis we have had only one natural left-back. For that, it’s good to have Brandon in the building and hopefully he can help us achieve our targets,” he concluded.
