Manchester United were unable to hold on to their early lead, as Manchester City fought back in the second half to register an impressive 3-1 win. A thunder strike from Marcus Rashford put United in front at the start of the Manchester Derby. The Red Devils held on to the lead until half time. However, they were unable to maintain that advantage for long, as the home side soon found a way into the contest.

Phil Foden netted twice in the second half before Erling Haaland scored the other to help Manchester City get the three points from the Premier League fixture. The result helped City stay in the title race, while the outcome was more damaging for United in their quest for a top-four finish. After the game, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes gave an honest assessment of the match, saying they played a bit “too deep” at times. “I think the commitment from the team was there,” Fernandes told Sky Sports.

Sometimes we played a little too deep: Bruno Fernandes

He added: “We had our chances. Sometimes we played a little too deep but you know City do that to all the teams, you have to defend your box and we did that really well in the first half. From a chance that could be ours it ended up 1-1. There’s always something more you can do in the game, if it is City or someone else you can always do something better. City are a team that knows how to have the ball and pin teams back. We knew we had to defend our goal really well and I think we did, we should have had more spells with the ball than we did in the second half.”

The 3-1 loss was a big blow to United’s hopes of a Champions League finish this season. However, the Portuguese international feels there is still a long way to go in the campaign. “Every time you don’t win a game it is a damage at this club. We know what this club demands and we want to win the games we are involved in. We didn’t get the three points today but there’s still a long way to go. We know it is not everything in our hands because other teams have to lose points but we have to do our job,” he explained.

‘Football is not only about possession’

Meanwhile, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag gave his verdict on the outcome. City controlled the possession, as United struggled to see much of the ball. However, ten Hag did not think it was a big problem, as he felt that his side had some good counter-attacking situations. “Football is not only about possession. Of course, you need the ball to score a goal and I think we scored a brilliant goal at the start and also after that,” ten Hag, quoted on the club’s website, said in his post-match press conference.

The manager added: “I think in the first 20 minutes we had some opportunities more. And also before if Garnacho passes the ball in that first moment to Rashford. It was another good opportunity. After it as well, Rashford had more and I think we defended brilliant out of possession and on defining moments we didn’t have it on our side. Because I think at 1-1 Rashford was on another break and just before the 2-1 Garnacho was on a breakthrough. I think we were really close to win or at least get a draw here.”
