Italian football has always been a happy hunting ground for Argentine footballers, especially strikes. Diego Marado took Napoli to new heights and Europea glory during the 1980’s before Gabriel Batistuta and Hernan Crespo set the league ablaze with their goal-scoring prowess. Batistuta netted 180 Serie A goals in 318 matches, while Crespo scored 26 times for Lazio in the 200-2001 league campaign to finish as the top goalscorer of the season. Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez is the latest Argentine striker to take the batten forward. The 25-year-old is Inter Milan’s new leader in attack. His ability to combine with fellow attackers along with goal-scoring instincts make him one of the best strikers in the world right now.

Martinez is in very impressive form, having scored four goals in his last three appearances. The 25-year-old scored a brace in Inter’s latest victory over Fiorentina (3-4). The Argentine international has already recorded 7 goals and 3 assists in his 16 games across all competitions this term. Martinez has been spearheading Inter’s attack since Romelu Lukaku has been sidelined with an ankle injury. Although Nerazzurri haven’t had a great Serie A campaign thus far, they have been impressive in the Champions League as Simone Inzaghi’s side need just three more points from two games to qualify for the last-16.

Inter’s superior head-to-head record against Barcelona has given them a big advantage in the race for the Champions League knockout spot, while forcing Barca on to the brink of elimination. In the home match against the Blaugrana earlier this month, Nerazzurri secured a 1-0 win before playing out a thrilling 3-3 draw at Camp Nou a week later. In the away leg, Martinez was the star-performer for Inter as the 25-year-old recorded one goal and an assist. His pace and work rate were too hot for the Barca defenders to handle.

Since joining Inter in 2018, Martinez has scored 65 goals in 180 appearances across all competitions. In the 2020-21 Serie A season, Martinez played a pivotal role in helping Inter lift the Scudetto trophy as he found the back of the net on 17 occasions and registered six assists. Although Inter conceded the league-title to AC Milan the following season, the Argentine striker improved his goal tally to 21 for the 2021-22 season. With the World Cup around the corner, Martinez is surely one of the hottest prospects to look forward to.
