La Liga: Luis Suarez on the cusp of securing remarkable milestone against Barcelona

Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez is on the cusp of securing a remarkable milestone in the upcoming La Liga encounter against FC Barcelona. Suarez has scored 19 times in the league this season. Two more goals will see him join Radamel Falcao and Antoine Griezmann as the only players to have scored more than 20 goals in their debut season for Atletico Madrid. The Colombian attacker scored 24 times in his debut season with the French striker accumulating 22 goals.

Lionel Messi is the La Liga’s top scorer in this edition with 28 goals. This certainly reflects with regard to FC Barcelona’s stats as a whole with the Spanish giants scoring the most times (80) this season. Atletico Marid have conceded the least number of goals in La Liga (22).

FC Barcelona have the best offensive home record in La Liga (43), while Diego Simeone’s men have the best defensive record on the road (13).

Atletico’s unbeaten record against Barcelona

The latter are further unbeaten in their last three games against the Spanish giants, across all competitions. The Madrid-based club recorded two wins and a draw.

Jan Oblak could make his 300th appearance for Atletico Madrid, with Stefan Savić recording his 200th match for the club, if selected in the lineup for the clash against Barcelona.

Marcos Llorente has been a game-changer for the Madrid-based side, recording 12 goals and 10 assists so far. Llorente’s performances have certainly helped Atletico Madrid put up a strong fight, making the current LaLiga season the tightest it has been for years.

Messi produced a brace at the weekend against Valencia as his side won 3-2. On the other hand, Simeone’s men won 1-0 at Elche thanks to Llorente’s strike.

Barca host Atletico Madrid at 4.15 pm CEST in one of the most decisive Liga games ever played between the two. Whoever wins this game will take a giant step forward towards winning the Liga title. Although it won’t end their hopes, it will be a major setback for whoever loses.

Games between Barca and Atletico developed a tradition of being absolute humdingers, with goals flying in at both ends. However, perhaps as a result of Simeone’s ‘caution first’ approach, encounters in the last decade have instead tended to be low-scoring affairs.
