While the action at the weekend was largely focussed on the Premier League title race, Jurrien Timber’s return went under the radar a bit.
It has been a difficult first campaign at Arsenal for Jurrien Timber. The versatile Dutch defender joined the Gunners from Ajax last summer but hardly got any playing time this season. He suffered an ACL injury on the opening day of the campaign and had to wait till the final day of the season to make his second Premier League appearance. The versatile center-back made his return as a second-half substitute for Ben White at the weekend.
While the action at the weekend was largely focused on the Premier League title race, Jurrien Timber’s long-awaited return went under the radar a bit. Heading into the final matchday of the season, Arsenal and Manchester City were still battling for the league title. In the end, City defeated West Ham United 3-1 to win their fourth consecutive league crown. It meant Arsenal’s hard-fought 2-1 win over Everton could only secure them a second-place finish for the second successive season.
Timber, who can play as a centre-back and right-back, spoke about his long wait to return to the first-team action. “I felt good after so many months of hard work, but on the other hand, we didn’t become champions today and that’s sad. It’s a hard one to take. I just wanted to give some energy to the team. It was still 1-1 and there were still enough chances to win the game, so I tried to do that it’s just a nice feeling to be back,” Timber, quoted on Arsenal.com, said after the match.
He added: “That’s very important. I think it’s a different feeling when you don’t play any minutes. After getting injured after the first game, then what happened today, getting minutes even though we didn’t become champions, it’s just nice for me to go into the summer with some minutes. That’s very important for me, it’s just my feeling.”
Timber spoke about watching his teammates from up close, as they fought City valiantly till the end. He now wants to be part of the team and keep playing with his teammates regularly. “I think it’s been a good few months. Obviously I was injured, so that’s hard but it was nice to be so close to the team, to get to know my teammates. Just to see them play every weekend, it’s just a pleasure to watch. It’s the same for you guys and for me, it was the same. Just to see everything up close was a privilege, so I enjoyed that. I want to be fit, I want to be good and I want to give everything I have and just enjoy playing with the guys,” he elaborated.
