Inter Milan well on course to win Serie-A despite draw at Napoli

Inter Milan went nine points clear at the top of the Serie-A after Sunday’s hard-earned 1-1 draw at Napoli. Christian Eriksen scored only his second goal for Inter Milan to secure a point for the team. Napoli was denied a penalty in the dying stages of the game, after VAR intervention overturned the Referee’s decision. Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic spilled the ball into his own net to give Napoli the lead in the first half. Inter went into the game looking for their 12th consecutive win and hit the post twice in the first half. Romelu Lukaku deflected Brozovic’s shot to the cross bar and a few minutes later the Belgian striker was again involved, as Eriksen’s free-kick from just outside the box deflected off Lukaku to the post.

Napoli got the goal against the run of play in the 36th minute. Lorenzo Insigne got inside the box with his trickery footwork and delivered a low cross from the left side, Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic spilled the ball into his own net after a slight collision with defender Stefan De Vrij.

Christian Eriksen’s Fine Goal

Inter Milan came out all guns blazing in the second half and got the deserving equalizer in the 55th minute. Christian Eriksen smashed a grounded shot from just outside the box to the left of Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret. It was Eriksen’s first league goal of the season.

Antonio Conte’s side pushed hard for the winner , but it was Napoli who got close to scoring the winner as Mateo Politano struck the woodwork with a thunderous strike from inside the box. The referee saw a foul on Politano on his way to strike the ball and pointed to the spot, but a VAR intervention overturned the decision.

Gennaro Gattuso’s side have 10 points from their last five league games and are fighting hard for the Champions League spot.

After the draw, Inter are on top of the Serie-A table with 75 points from 31 games. Napoli are just two points adrift from fourth place Juventus who have 62 points from 3 games after Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Atalanta. AC Milan are at the second spot with 66 points after their 2-1 win against Genoa on Sunday.

Inter Milan need 13 points from the remaining seven games to win the Serie A title.
