Kerala Blasters FC forward Jorge Diaz has been charged by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) Disciplinary Committee for ‘violent conduct’ in their Hero Indian Super League (ISL) match against ATK Mohun Bagan on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at the Tilak Maidan Stadium. In the charge notice issued by the AIFF body, Jorge Diaz had been indicted for violating Article 48.1.2 of the AIFF Disciplinary Code. It mentions the player ‘broke the dugout panel, an act of violent conduct’ therefore committing an offence.

Diaz was substituted out in the 85th minute of the match and was already on a yellow card for time wasting. The Argentine was then shown a direct red card for his actions on the bench. Therefore the 31-year-old will serve an automatic one-match ban in Kerala Blasters’ next game against Hyderabad FC on Wednesday.

The match against the Mariners was a fiesty affair, the match end at 2-2 courtesy of a stoppage-time equaliser from ATKMB midfielder Joni Kauko. The Blasters had taken the lead through Adrian Luna’s superb free-kick before David Williams leveled the score for Juan Ferrando’s side.

Luna’s second goal of the night restored the lead for Ivan Vukomanovic’s side and it looked like KBFC would take all three points but Kauko’s 97th minute strike broke Blasters’ heart and rescued a point for ATKMB. Referee had to take out the card on multiple occasions as tempers flared in the final stages of the game.

Diaz’s absence could be a blow to Blasters when they play league leaders HFC in a crucial clash in Bambolim on Wednesday. The last time Diaz missed a game was against Jamshedpur FC, when he was suspended after receiving four yellow cards, and KBFC lost that match 3-0.

The Argentine has formed a potent partnership with fellow striker Alvaro Vazquez and they complement each other very well. Diaz is full of running, pressing the opposition defenders and often moves to wider positions, making space for Luna and Sahal Abdul Samad to make the inside runs.

Blasters are currently placed fifth in the standings with 27 points from 16 games, just one point behind fourth-placed Mumbai City FC, who have played 17 matches.
