Bartholomew Ogbeche scored a first-half double as Hyderabad FC defeated FC Goa 3-2 in the Indian Super League (ISL) fixture at GMC Athletic Stadium on Saturday. The victory helped the Nizams to consolidate their top spot in the ISL standings with 32 points from 17 games. Jorge Ortiz canceled out Ogbeche’s opener before Hyderabad FC restored the lead through the Nigerian forward’s second of the night. After the break, Joao Victor doubled HFC’s lead before Devendra Murgaonkar reduced the deficit.

It was FCG who started the match on the driving seat as Ortiz chased down a long ball from the back but his effort was denied by HFC keeper Laxmikant Kattimani, who was quickly off his line to close down the space.

At the other end, Ogbeche laid the ball to Souvik Chakraborty but his low drive went just wide. On 25 minutes, Ogbeche headed home from right-back Ashish Rai’s in-swinging cross to give the lead to the Nizams.

FCG equlaised within ten minutes of the goal when Alberto Noguera played a perfect through ball to release Ortiz on goal, and the Spanish forward slotted home past Kattimani into the far bottom corner from the right side of the box to take his goal-tally to eight for the season.

However, HFC restored the lead when Ogbeche completed his brace on 41 minutes. The 37-year-old striker lifted the ball over Anwar Ali on the turn before going past Edu Bedia’s challenge and drilling the ball into the net with his left foot. It was a poor piece of goalkeeping from FCG custodian Dheeraj Singh as he spilled the ball.

HFC returns to the summit of the points table

Meanwhile the goal took Ogbeche’s tally for the 2021-22 season to 16 while it was also the 51st goal in all-time ISL records for the Nigerian. Just before the hour-mark, Princeton’s first-time half-volley went just wide of goal before Victor made the score 3-1, twenty minutes from time.

The 33-year-old midfielder’s effort deflected off Anwar Ali and sailed past Dheeraj. In response, Noguera’s effort from Saviour Gama’s cut back went straight to Kattimani  before Murgaonkar scored FCG’s second of the night on 73 minutes. The 23-year-old forward headed home from Brandon Fernandes’ cross.

The Gaurs pushed hard for the equaliser as Sanson Pereira’s low curler was parried away by Kattimani. But Manuel Marquez’ side held on to the slender lead and secured all three points and return to the summit of the points table.
