Tottenham Hotspur supporters were treated to an exciting signing of a talented goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from Italian side Empoli. The 26-year-old shot-stopper has put pen to paper on a contract that will run until 2028. Besides, the Italy international will wear the number 13 shirt. Vicario might not be a big name in European football, however, the goalkeeper is gaining plenty of recognition due to his recent top level performances.
Guglielmo Vicario, who has also played for Venezia and Cagliari, has also become a part of the national team setup. There were other clubs in the race to sign him this summer but Tottenham won the race for the talented Italian. “Yes, I’m excited. It’s a dream for me to be here, one of the biggest teams in England and in the Premier League. I’d like to start quickly, to join my team-mates because, for me, it’s a big pleasure to be here,” he told SPURSPLAY.
Vicario then explained how the move to Tottenham Hotspur materialised and what was his reaction when he heard about Spurs’ interest. “I didn’t believe this opportunity. I told my agent it’s my first choice, I want to go to the Premier League and a big club like Spurs. For me, it’s so exciting. I want to learn a lot of things because the culture of football in Italy is so different. I need to adapt quickly to my team-mates, to the style of play, so many differences between Italian football (and the Premier League). The fans are amazing as well, the buzz when you play well. I love this mentality,” he added.
Tottenham Hotspur will have a new head coach this season in Ange Postecoglou, who likes to dominate the possession and play out from the back. Guglielmo Vicario revealed that he had spoken with the manager and he likes his “attacking mentality.” “I spoke with him, and he told me the keeper is so important with his attacking mentality. He wants to dominate the game. I love this mentality. It will be a big chance for me,” the Italian said.
Vicario, who is known for his athletic ability, is good with playing out from the back. However, it will be interesting to see how quickly he can adapt to the demands of the Premier League following his switch from Serie A. “I think we need to fight a lot. We have to take the best for the Club. I don’t want to make specific goals, because we have to focus day by day. If we work a lot, follow the coach, I think we can reach a lot of goals. We are a big team of big players. For me, the team is amazing,” he elaborated.
