Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus after the team registered an impressive 1-0 win away to Chelsea. Jesus scored the only goal of the game in the second half, creating a shot out of nothing to secure three points for the Premier League champions. The Etihad Player of the Month for August has continued his fine form into September, and Guardiola is understandably happy with his contribution. “If one person, one player deserves the best, it is Gabriel,” Guardiola was quoted as saying by the club’s website. “He runs for everyone and when he scores, I am the happiest man. He can play in the three positions upfront and he does it really well.”

It is Jesus’ attitude and tireless workrate that continues to impress his manager. “We know from the past in the duels how aggressive they are, but you have to handle it at this level,” said Pep. “Gabriel goes down, gets up and tries again. He’s a young player and one of the best signings we have done in this period together.”

It is another win and an important one, as the defending champions under Pep Guardiola continues to break records. “I am so proud,” said Pep. “But in 221 victories, I never scored one goal. I will not be a good striker for the next few years. I share it for all the people in the Club and the players. All the years we spent together since day one.”

“I cannot deny how proud we are to achieve that. To be close to Les McDowall the previous manager to do this is fantastic. To do it here at the home of the Champions League winners, and the way we played. We played with courage. We play every single game with courage, even in defeats. Sometimes I make bad decisions, but the players always respond, the way they play makes me so proud and it’s why we have that record.”

Gabriel Jesus: Everyone played so good

Goalscorer Gabriel Jesus has praised the performance of his teammates during the crucial Premier League victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. “We prepared the game to play well like we always try to do,” he said.

“We came to play against one of the best teams, they’re European champions, they have a lot of amazing players, so we knew it would be difficult coming here at their home. We played very well and won the game.

“I play like a striker. I can never turn properly with the way they play but I turned good and I took the shot. It was a little lucky but I’m very happy to score the goal and most important is that we won the game and everyone played so good!”

The victory sees City go level on points (13) with Thomas Tuchel’s side in the league table after six matches. “This is not about the message. We always try to play good but sometimes we don’t play so good. We have a lot of top players to create the chances and to score the goals. That’s what I think we have,” he added.
