Winger Lallianzuala Chhangte said he was delighted to join Mumbai City FC on a six-month loan deal from Chennaiyin FC and feels it was his “best choice” as the move could give wings to his career. Chhangte’s switch to MCFC happened on the final day of the January transfer window and the club and player were pleased this deal pulled through. The 24-year-old was in his final year of contract with the former Indian Super League champions Chennaiyin FC and had to wait till January 31, 2022  to know about his future.

While speaking to Press Trust of India Chhangte said, “I thought a lot about making this move and I’ve been discussing it with my family and my agent. I believe this was the answer to my prayers because I wasn’t sure if this move would go through, but on the final day of the transfer window, I heard the good news that the club had allowed me to go.

“I want to thank Chennaiyin FC and of course my new club Mumbai City FC for making this possible,” he added.

Chhangte joined Chennaiyin in 2019 from Delhi Dynamos and went on to become a pivotal player for the Marina Machans. Both MCFC and CFC played smartly while negotiating the deal. CFC didn’t risk losing the player for free when his contract expires in the summer as MCFC are paying the Marina Machans an undisclosed loan fee reportedly worth around 1.2 crore, half of which is believed to cover the players’ wages.

The 24-years old feels playing for Mumbai City FC would develop him as a player and provide him international exposure, he said, “Mumbai City are the champions and that is a big factor in coming here. They are a club with the ambition to be at the highest level and coming to Mumbai City FC is the best option for me to grow as a player and a player in the future.

“Of course, being a part of a club that is connected globally will help me progress well and it could also give me a possibility to play outside India if I perform well too,” he further added.

Chhangte quickly made an impact at his new club as he played a vital role in Mumbai City’s 1-0 win over Chennaiyin FC on Sunday. He was adjudged the Hero of the match for his impressive performance down the right flank. His pace and trickery proved too hot for his former teammates to handle.

MCFC are currently placed fifth in the points table with 22 points from 14 games, level on points with fourth-placed Jamshedpur FC, who have a game in hand. Chhangte has been brought in to add more quality to the Islander’s attack and help them achieve a top-four finish.
