Manchester United’s 2022-23 season came to a sad conclusion with a defeat in the final of the FA Cup against local rivals Manchester City. The Red Devils were never really the favourites to lift the trophy, hence they can be proud of the fact that they made City work hard for their lives to register a narrow 2-1 win at the Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Besides, there are other positives to take from the campaign as well. Man United finished third in the Premier League, marking their return to Champions League football and also won a trophy in the form of an EFL Cup.

If all the things are taken into account, then this has been a positive season for Erik ten Hag and his boys considering how bad they were 12 months ago. Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, who joined from Real Madrid last summer, also believes that Manchester United are on the right track. He has been one of the players of the season for the club and has played an important role in helping the team enjoy a fruitful campaign.

We are on an upward curve: Casemiro

“It’s absolutely right that we’re on the right track. We’re on the up and we’re growing as a team. I believe that we’ve been picking up on the mentality of the manager and the way that he wants us to play. It’s true that, in football terms, it’s very well, well not early, we already have our own philosophy, but, when you’re talking about football, it’s difficult because the manager is relatively new,” he was quoted as saying by the club’s website.

“We’ve been together one season. We know that other sides have also taken a while to start winning things, like Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, who have also taken a while to start winning things with their other managers. And so we are on an upward curve. We’re taking on board the manager’s ideas and philosophy, and so we need to keep going step by step, gradually growing and improving. Of course, next season, it will also be very important for us to keep going with this growth.”

‘Wanted to end the season in a different way’

Meanwhile, Manchester United attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes assures the supporters that they will try again next season after losing the FA Cup final. “We wanted to end the season in a different way, but we are aware that we have made the right steps for the future,” he told BBC Sport. “It’s not a successful season overall, but this is a good season. We have to now look forward, to get back to this cup final next season, and understand that there is still a long way to go to get into a position to win bigger trophies and have bigger achievements.”

The Portuguese midfielder then praised the fans for the support they gave the team throughout the season. “The disappointment in the dressing room is also because we couldn’t [do] the job for the fans that they really deserve. They really deserve it [for] what they have done the entire season for us. All the support they have given to us… we are really, really, grateful for everything they have been doing for us throughout the season. The only promise that I can [make] is that next season we will come again and try again,” he added.
