Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 3-1 at Westfalenstadion on Tuesday to win the German Super Cup. Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring towards the end of the first half before Thomas Mueller extended the lead after the break. Although Marco Reus pulled one back for Dortmund, Lewandowski scored his second of the night to seal the victory in front of 25,000 fans. Meanwhile, it was also the first competitive win for Bayern’s new boss Julian Nagelsman. The match was preceded with a minute’s silence for former Bayern and Germany legend Gerd Muller, who died at the age of 75 on Sunday.

The first best chance of the game fell to Dortmund captain Reus when he was played through by Jude Bellingham with a superb through ball. However, Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made a brilliant save with his right foot to deny Dortmund the opening goal.

At the other end, a few minutes after the half-hour-mark, Joshua Kimmich’s cleverly taken low free-kick found Muller inside the penalty area. But the German striker’s initial attempt was blocked by Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, followed by Lewandowski’s shot from the rebound somehow kept out of goal by the Dortmund defence.

Dortmund’s 16-year-old striker Youssoufa Moukoko thought he had scored but the goal was ruled offside. Erling Haaland soon brilliantly controlled a long ball before his attempt was once again saved by Neuer, who was quick to come out of his goal and close the space.

Four minutes before the break, Serge Gnabry’s cross from the left flank was powerfully headed in by Lewandoski to break the deadlock.

Lewandowski’s assist and second goal

Three minutes into the second half, Lewandowski’s clever back-heel from left-back Alphonso Davies’ low cross beat Kobel, and Mueller calmly slotted the ball into an empty net.

In response, Haaland found the back of the net at the other end but was disallowed for offside. Few minutes after the hour-mark, Bellingham laid the ball to Reus on the edge of the penalty area and the 32-year-old’s right-footed curler went past Neur.

However, Marco Rose’s side’s hopes of a comeback were shattered when Lewandowski pounced on a defensive error to complete his brace. While trying to play out from the back, Manuel Akanji’s attempted kick-out was blocked by Corentin Tolisso and the ball fell to the 32-year-old talisman who calmly picked his spot to make the score 3-1 in favour of Bayern.

It was the Poland captain’s third goal in two games this season. Lewandowski, who had scored a record 41 Bundesliga goals last season, seems to be continuing from where he had left off last campaign.
