Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo IV has been on the minds of gamers worldwide for years now. The hype has only been amplified by its upcoming release on June 6th, with early access for deluxe and ultimate edition buyers starting on June 1st. While much of the focus has been on the game’s button-mashing campaign and various character classes, the real draw for many players will be the post-campaign seasons that promise to offer something truly special. Why Diablo IV’s Post-Campaign Seasons Could Make It The Next Big Thing in Gaming.

Destiny 2 as Inspiration

Blizzard Entertainment’s latest development blog post outlines how Diablo IV’s seasonal content updates will work, and it all sounds incredibly familiar. It appears to take its inspiration from one of the few success stories in live-service gaming: Destiny 2. Bungie’s loot shooter has been offering quarterly seasonal content updates for years now, with each season adding more challenges, new gear, and expanding the sci-fi lore.

The Season Journey: A Guide to Diablo IV’s Seasonal Content

Like Destiny 2, Diablo IV’s post-campaign end game will consist of four updates a year, each with distinct themes, new rewards, and smaller stories that add to the grim fantasy world of Sanctuary. The Season Journey will be the main guide for this seasonal content, consisting of chapters with lists of objectives. Completing each chapter will earn seasonal rewards like crafting materials, Legendary Aspects used to upgrade the Codex of Power, a post-game skill tree, and Favor, a special type of XP that ranks up the seasonal battle pass.

Battle Passes: The Grind

There will be three battle passes, with one regular and free, while the other two are premium and cost $10 and $25, respectively. The premium battle pass will have a new reward for each level, while the Accelerated Battle Pass lets players skip the first 20 levels and comes with a battle pass exclusive emote that hasn’t been revealed yet. Premium rank-up rewards will contain cosmetics, while the free track offers a resource called Smoldering Ashes. These can be used to purchase various Season Blessings that let you earn extra XP, Gold, or Obols. These buffs will reset at the end of each season, so players will want to grind for them early to maximize benefits.

Microtransactions

Blizzard has been transparent about the Cosmetic Shop, where players can purchase cosmetics that are exclusive to the shop and cost real money. They stress, however, that nothing of gameplay value will be sold there, as it is purely for player expression. Diablo IV also has a cross-purchase feature linked to a player’s Battle.net account, so any premium currency or money spent on one platform will carry over to the other.

Final Thoughts

Blizzard Entertainment’s approach to post-campaign content with Diablo IV’s seasonal updates is very similar to Destiny 2’s approach, and it seems like a smart move. Destiny 2’s seasonal model has been very successful, and the game has remained one of the top games in its genre for years. The seasonal content updates offer a good mix of new and challenging content, while the battle passes give players something to work towards. The Cosmetic Shop provides additional customization options, and the cross-purchase feature is a welcome addition. It remains to be seen whether Diablo IV’s post-campaign seasons will be enough to make it the next big thing in gaming, but the signs are looking good. We’ll have to wait until July for the first season to drop, but until then, players can get a taste of the game in the last beta going live the weekend of May 12th.
