Overview of Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 8: Thorfinn’s sleep was disturbed by his recurring nightmares

In the starting of episode, Thorfinn’s nightmare haunts him as he struggles to remember the terrifying details. In the dream, his younger self attempts to kill young Einar and his family, but Thorfinn tries to stop him, only to fall into a gaping hole in the ground. He desperately tries to climb out, but is pulled down by the dead. Thorfinn wakes up screaming, and Einar notes that he was talking in his sleep, mentioning “father” and “Askeladd.” Thorfinn collects water from the well and wonders why he can’t remember his dreams, feeling that he has forgotten something important.

As they head out to work, the retainers come to collect the wood that Thorfinn and Einar cut, admiring the impressive wheat Einar has grown. However, one of them complains about Ketil allowing a slave to farm the land, insisting that slaves should not be treated as equals to retainers.

While fixing a roof, Thorfinn finally confides in Einar, revealing that Askeladd was the one who killed his father. Thorfinn spent 11 years following him, consumed with hatred and the desire for revenge. But his chance to avenge his father was taken from him when Askeladd was killed by someone else right in front of him. Einar realizes that Thorfinn must still be haunted by his past if he is dreaming about Askeladd, but Thorfinn feels like he is forgetting something important.

Einar tries to console him, insisting that his quest for revenge is over and there is no point in hating a dead man. But Thorfinn realizes that without hate, he is empty. Hate was the only thing that kept him going for so many years, and now that it is gone, he feels lost. He recalls Askeladd’s last words, urging him to become a true warrior, and realizes that he no longer hates him. This realization leaves him feeling conflicted, as he doesn’t know how to move forward without his all-consuming hatred.

Their conversation is interrupted by Sverkel, who reminds them to keep working as there are other jobs to be done. Thorfinn tries to push his thoughts aside and focus on his work, but he can’t shake the feeling that he is missing something important. He knows he needs to find a new purpose, but he doesn’t know where to start.

Sverkel takes Thorfinn and Einar to the beach to teach them how to fish with a net. Despite their efforts, they are unable to catch any fish. Sverkel advises Thorfinn to learn new things one at a time, and explains that if he is empty, he can fill himself with anything he wants. Thorfinn ponders over the idea of rebirth and wonders if he can change himself.

The next day, Thorfinn asks Einar if people can change and what it takes to change. Einar reveals that he used to be a warrior, but now, no one would guess it by looking at him. He’s glad he didn’t meet Thorfinn during his warrior days, as they may have fought each other. Einar then assures Thorfinn that people can change for the better, and that he himself is on that path. Suddenly, they find their wheat field completely destroyed. Einar suspects the retainers of doing it, as they are the only ones who would know how to uproot the wheat without completely destroying it. They’ll have to borrow seeds for the next planting and may not have a harvest for some time. Einar is enraged at the retainers for their destruction of their hard-earned crops.

Thorfinn tries to calm Einar down and suggests talking to Pater before taking any action. However, Einar is furious and surprised at Thorfinn’s calm demeanor. Thorfinn admits that he has been a destroyer for most of his life and has no right to be angry at the retainers. He accepts that if Einar wants to kill the retainers, then Thorfinn himself deserves to be killed by Einar as well. Despite Einar’s anger, Thorfinn shows a newfound maturity and wisdom, understanding the consequences of their actions.

Upon seeing their destroyed wheat field, Thorfinn and Einar were filled with frustration and anger towards the perpetrators. They suspected the retainers and planned to confront them. However, upon calling Pater, they were advised to leave the field untouched until an investigation is done. Pater reminded them that discrimination and bullying are common in the world, but there are still good people around, and they shouldn’t lose hope.

Later, Einar confided in Thorfinn about Arnheid’s situation, where she had given up on the idea of ever being free again. Einar pondered on the type of life they are living, where being liked means being bound to someone and being hated means being treated poorly. As they were discussing, they saw the retainers approaching. Thorfinn suggested they avoid them, but Einar confronted them head-on. One of the retainers denied any knowledge of the destroyed wheat field, but insulted the quality of their crop as being grown by slaves. Einar became enraged and tried to attack the man, but Thorfinn held him back. In the heat of the moment, Thorfinn ended up punching the man, breaking his jaw. This triggered an attack from the rest of the retainers, and Einar was hit with a rake from behind.

As the retainers continued to beat Einar, Thorfinn saw a vision of his father, who seemed to be saying something to him, but he couldn’t hear it. The situation had escalated out of control, and Thorfinn realized that he had let his anger get the best of him.
