In this chapter of “Vinland Saga,” Thorfinn engages in a battle with Snake, a guard who is seeking revenge for his men who were killed by Gardar, a farm guard. Despite being unarmed, Thorfinn manages to hold his own against Snake’s lightning-fast attacks, impressing Snake with his skill. However, Snake lands a small cut on Thorfinn’s face, leaving him momentarily vulnerable to a sudden kick that sends him flying, leaving Gardar and the cart behind with Snake.
Snake finds it difficult to ignore the fact that Gardar murdered five of his men and seeks the opinion of Thorfinn and Arnheid on whether Gardar’s life is worth more than the lives of his five men. Both remain silent, and Snake concludes that the only way to compensate for the loss of life is with life, plunging his weapon into Gardar.
Gardar rises from his cart and grabs Snake by the neck, losing consciousness as Gardar continues to choke him. Arnheid convinces Gardar to stop and they depart. As they leave, Gardar realizes that his brother Hjalti is in Birka and wishes to thank him. Despite the severity of Gardar’s wound, Arnheid seems content with their departure and thanks Thorfinn and Einar for their help.
As Gardar pushes the cart, he begins to feel a chill run through his body and sees the images of his past as a slave. His thoughts drift to the birth of his son, Hjalti, and the promises he made to fight for his honor and wealth. He fondly remembers Hjalti’s first steps and changing his diapers, before his mind is brought back to his brutal beatings at the hands of his former master.
Gardar asks Arnheid how old Hjalti is now, assuming he must be eight or nine. However, Arnheid reveals that he is only six, leading Gardar to apologize for losing track of time during his years as a slave. He admits that he missed Hjalti’s younger years and worries that his son may have forgotten him. Despite imagining that Hjalti will want to go on viking adventures in the future, Gardar promises to never leave Arnheid and Hjalti’s side again.
As he loses blood and grows weary, Gardar rests his head on Arnheid’s lap and has a vision of returning home and embracing his beloved six-year-old son, Hjalti. In that moment, as if it were his final act, Gardar declared that he had arrived home. Sadly, Arnheid wept bitterly as they were confronted by Snake’s men.
