The Consequences of Revenge: Snake’s Men vs. Gardar

In this Chapter, Thorfinn was engaged in a fierce battle against Snake, who impressed him with his lightning-fast movements. Despite being unarmed, Thorfinn was holding his own, avoiding all of Snake’s attacks. Snake, on the other hand, was taken aback by Thorfinn’s skill and wondered what kind of tough life he must have had. In the midst of the fight, Thorfinn landed a punch on Snake, but before he could strike again, Snake dodged and landed a small cut on Thorfinn’s face. As Thorfinn pondered how such a proficient warrior ended up working as a farm guard, Snake wondered how a skilled man like him became a slave. However, Snake refocused his attention and launched even faster attacks. Though Thorfinn managed to dodge most of them, he was caught off guard by a sudden kick that sent him flying, leaving Gardar and the cart behind with Snake.

Snake gazes at Gardar, who is sitting inside a cart. Arnheid intervenes, pleading with Snake not to kill him. However, Snake finds it difficult to ignore the fact that Gardar murdered five of his men. Sverkel tries to make amends by offering to sell his farm, but Snake declines the offer, stating that it’s not about money. He goes on to acknowledge that he and his men are nothing but foolish scoundrels who can no longer use their real names.

Nonetheless, he believes that their lives still matter, and that Gardar must pay for his crime. Snake turns to Thorfinn and Arnheid, seeking their opinion on whether Gardar’s life is worth more than the lives of his five men, but they both remain silent. Finally, Snake concludes that the only way to compensate for the loss of life is with life, and plunges his weapon into Gardar.

Snake accuses Arnheid of being responsible for Gardar’s escape and asks if they will continue fighting to avenge his loss. He warns them that they will face punishment for their actions. Suddenly, Gardar rises from his cart and grabs Snake by the neck. Although Snake manages to stab Gardar’s leg, he loses consciousness as Gardar continues to choke him. Thorfinn tries to intervene, but Gardar is too strong. Arnheid convinces Gardar to stop and they depart.

As Gardar comes to his senses, he realizes that his brother Hjalti is in Birka and wishes to thank him. He asks if he can borrow Thorfinn’s cart, but it turns out to belong to Sverkel, who offers it to him. Despite the severity of Gardar’s wound, Arnheid seems content with their departure and thanks Thorfinn and Einar for their help. Thorfinn attempts to warn her that Gardar may not survive, but Arnheid is undeterred and leaves with him anyway.

As Gardar pushes the cart, he begins to feel a chill run through his body and his mind starts to wander. He sees the images of his past as a slave, surrounded by others in a similar position. His thoughts then drift to the birth of his son, Hjalti, and the promises he made to fight for his honor and wealth. He fondly remembers Hjalti’s first steps and changing his diapers, before his mind is brought back to his brutal beatings at the hands of his former master. Gardar asks Arnheid how old Hjalti is now, assuming he must be eight or nine.

However, Arnheid reveals that he is only six, leading Gardar to apologize for losing track of time during his years as a slave. He admits that he missed Hjalti’s younger years and worries that his son may have forgotten him. Gardar imagines that Hjalti must be mischievous like him, recalling his own past pranks such as lighting horse tails on fire. Arnheid jokes about whether Gardar did this himself, to which he confesses and admits that it caused trouble with his father. Despite imagining that Hjalti will want to go on viking adventures in the future, Gardar promises to never leave Arnheid and Hjalti’s side again. As he loses blood and grows weary, he rests his head on Arnheid’s lap and has a vision of when he left to fight at the call of other men, leaving his family behind.

Gardar had a vivid vision of returning home and embracing his beloved six-year-old son, Hjalti. In that moment, as if it were his final act, Gardar declared that he had arrived home. Sadly, Arnheid, who was holding Gardar’s lifeless body, wept bitterly as they were confronted by Snake’s men.
