A fan-favorite from 2008, Spice and Wolf is a reworking of classic adventure anime about romance and fantasy. The protagonist, Lawrence, is a traveling salesman who visits various cities in search of unique and interesting goods to sell. A female named Holo, who has an animal tail, promises Lawrence abundant harvests during one of his adventures. Lawrence grants Holo’s wish to go home, and the two set out on their adventure together.

In the first episode of Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets The Wise Wolf, a wise elderly woman tells a young man a number of stories. Even though the kid doesn’t pay attention to most stories, the lady tells one about a wolf who gave abundant crops to a village. The story piques the girl’s attention, and they go into great depth discussing it. After that, we shift to our male protagonist Lawrence, a traveling merchant.
A handful of guards and knights had a quick encounter with him. He makes amends with them and then heads for Yarei’s house in Pasole Village to meet with him. One of the village’s festival events delays Yarei, so Lawrence ends up visiting someone else instead of Yarei. They discuss the new lord of Pasole and the town’s harvests.
Additionally, they discuss Yarei’s development as a salesperson. Lawrence then goes to a river to relax. It is there that he meets Holo. Holo tells Lawrence some important details about her history and powers. If Holo is the legendary harvest deity, Lawrence doesn’t know. He wants her to show him by changing her appearance that she can. Just as Lawrence watches, Holo consumes some wheat and undergoes a transformation.
