Overview of Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 7: Thorgil, the eldest son of the Ketil family, returns home

Another food theft has occurred on Ketil’s farm, but the culprits left mixed footprints, and Fox was unable to track them down. Despite only taking small amounts, the repeated incidents suggest that the thieves need to be punished.

Sverkel’s recent generosity towards Einar and Arnheid has caught the attention of the latter. Arnheid believes that Sverkel likes them, but Einar thinks he was just repaying a debt. Arnheid reminds Einar that they are slaves and not owed anything, prompting him to wonder why Sverkel would like them. Arnheid laughs and praises Sverkel’s character, causing Einar to blush. However, their conversation is cut short when Ketil’s wife interrupts and scolds Arnheid for gossiping instead of preparing breakfast. She warns them that Ketil is returning soon with guests, and they need to make the necessary preparations.

Upon surveying their flourishing crops, Einar becomes elated at the prospect of purchasing his freedom in a few years. Curiosity sets in, as he ponders if Arnheid shares a similar fate. However, he is hesitant to ask her. Thorfinn suggests that he inquire about it, but Einar is uncertain if it would be appropriate. Deciding on a course of action, Einar recommends that they pray for rain and protection from pests. He falls to his knees and begins to supplicate to God, with Thorfinn following suit.

Ketil arrives with his son Thorgil, who inquires about the well-being of his mother and Olmar. Ketil reports that Olmar is brimming with vitality, but due to his physical limitations, he is not fit for battle and should remain behind. Thorgil dissents, asserting that the battlefield can transform a man, citing the example of King Canute who underwent a metamorphosis and is no longer addressed as “prince.” Snake and his companions encounter Ketil and Thorgil and greet them. Snake expresses astonishment at Thorgil’s survival, but Thorgil credits his training to Snake. Ketil is inquisitive about Snake’s pursuit, and he divulges that he has caught two youngsters who are thieves. He intends to turn them over to Ketil for punishment.

During dinner at Ketil’s house, Thorgil shared gruesome details about battles, where some men would kill each other just to capture women they could sell. Olmar, inspired by Thorgil’s stories, expressed his willingness to fight in England. Thorgil, impressed by Olmar’s courage, decided to give him a souvenir in the form of a necklace. However, Olmar was taken aback when he realized that the necklace was made of dried human ears, presumably of English men. He threw the necklace in disgust, and Thorgil laughed at his reaction, mocking his lack of bravery. Thorgil then narrated the story of Ketil, who was known as Iron Fist during his younger days. Ketil’s weapon would shatter during battles due to his own strength, but he would continue fighting bare-handed. However, before they could rest, Snake reminded Ketil of a pressing matter- the thieves’ situation.

The dinner conversation at Ketil’s house took a dark turn when Thorgil began recounting tales of barbarism and violence. Olmar, keen to prove his mettle, expressed a desire to fight in England. Thorgil, impressed by Olmar’s bravery, gifted him a necklace made of human ears. However, Olmar was repulsed by the gruesome souvenir and threw it away. Thorgil, finding Olmar’s reaction amusing, mocked him for being cowardly. He then recounted the legend of Ketil, also known as Iron Fist, who was feared for his incredible strength in battle. Ketil’s weapon would shatter during fights, but he would continue fighting bare-handed. However, Snake reminded Ketil of a pressing issue- the problem of thieves.

Ketil inquired about the identity of the two children, and the boy responded that his name was Sture, while his younger sister was Thora. Ketil wondered if anyone could speak on their behalf, and Snake disclosed that their family included a mother and a baby, but he had not brought the sick mother with them. Ketil probed further and asked about the father, Snorri, who had gone to sell vegetables and never returned. Sture confirmed that Snorri was his father, and their grandfather was Bo. Pater interjected and revealed that Snorri owed him money for the land he had rented. Thorgil speculated that Snorri was likely dead, considering he had not returned for a year. However, Sture vehemently denied the possibility of his father’s demise. Ketil was despondent upon hearing their predicament, as typically, families in such situations would be hired by others for work. However, with the mother’s illness, no one had offered them any jobs.

Ketil inquired about the stolen item, and Snake informed him that they had only confessed to stealing a bag of flour. Ketil questioned if Snake had coerced the children into confessing, but Snake clarified that he had only encouraged them to reveal the truth but not what to say. Thorgil suggested that they should amputate one arm from each child as punishment. Sture pleaded with them to be lenient with his sister, citing her young age. Thorgil then threatened to amputate both arms of Sture if he accepted his sister’s punishment. Snake also requested Ketil to show mercy towards the children.

In conclusion, Ketil was saddened by the children’s plight and the family’s lack of employment opportunities. He was also conflicted about how to punish the children for their theft.

Ketil was appalled at the transformation his son had undergone. The fear of what Sture had become was overwhelming, but Ketil knew that he had no choice but to punish him for his crimes. However, Pater spoke up and voiced his opposition to such extreme punishment, stating that it was essentially an execution. Instead, Pater suggested that Sture work to repay Ketil for what he had stolen, and the money Snorri owed them. He offered to teach Sture how to farm and if he became a proficient worker, Ketil would be fully compensated. This way, there would be no need for Sture to resort to stealing again. Ketil was relieved to have found a solution to his problem and readily agreed.

However, in that moment, Pater contradicted himself and suggested that Sture should still receive a beating as a form of punishment. Ketil was surprised by this, but Thorgil seemed to understand. Ketil relented and stated that working was enough of a punishment, but Snake argued that an actual punishment was necessary to ensure that people took Sture’s crimes seriously. Snake then took out the blade of an axe and asked Ketil how many times he should hit Sture. Ketil initially said five, but then corrected himself and asked for ten strokes. Sture, however, pushed his sister away and asked to be hit twenty times instead, and begged for her to be spared. Thorgil found this intriguing and wished to be the one to administer the punishment. Snake was hesitant, warning Thorgil that he didn’t know how to hold back, but eventually relented and gave him the go-ahead. Thorgil swung the axe and with one swift hit, sent Sture flying. Seeing this, Ketil rushed over to stop Thorgil, stating that he would take over the punishment himself.

Later that night, Ketil retired to bed with Arnheid and revealed that the “Iron First” was just a facade. He admitted to being afraid of Thorgil, war, and violence. Arnheid comforted him and told him that being kind wasn’t a weakness. Ketil acknowledged that she was the only person who would tell him that, which was why she was the only person he confided in. He then pleaded with Arnheid to stay with him, stating that without her, his world would be shrouded in darkness.
